My worst stab wound!

Well it's not my first stab wound, but it's my first deep one. I've stabbed myself before, and I've cut myself pretty deep before, but this is the worst stab wound I've ever had! Also the first time I've been cut by a knife while not using it.

My friends were in this year's first Battle of the Bands on Saturday, so I went (they took third, but deserved first, really). I left my money (for ticket, food, etc.in the car, and I wanted to get in, so I ran back to get it. I jumped over a rail, and when I landed, my Endura found a way open. On the next step, the damn thing jammed right into my thigh (cargo pocket area)!

I went back into the building, and mentioned it to my friends. When I pointed to where it was, I noticed blood on my fingers. I figured it wasn't that bad. About 10 minutes later, there was more blood, and it was still wet. I decided it might be a good idea to check it out, so I went to the bathroom to take a looksy. My eyes musta bugged out like a sheeple looking at a butterfly knife!!! I don't think I've ever seen that much blood on myself before, I guess because I hadn't cleaned it up yet. Anyway, I cleaned it up, and the cut itself was (is) maybe half of an inch wide, and I'm not sure how deep. Not one to wimp out, I just told my friends about it (in case I just dropped all of the sudden

), and got back to having a good time. I lost a little more blood afterwards, but I didn't have to go to the hospital or anything.

It's healed up quite nicely. Just thought I'd share the experience. I'm now an advocate of ANYTHING which will keep a knife from opening/ stabbing while not deployed. Instead of folders, I have decided that I shall hence forth carry only swords, which will NOT cut pre-deployment!

Any thoughts, similar experiences welcome.

About 4 years in martial arts class, I was sitting down flipping my CQC6 in my right handback and forth between normal and reverse grips. I slipped and it stuck into my right thigh. The wound was as wide as the blade and more than an inch deep.A trip to the ER and 15 stitches later, I learned two things.

1. Never play around with sharp objects.
2. The American Tanto Chisel Grind is as good as any other grind.

About a year ago my friend bought a CS SRK with a six inch blade. Being the person he ie, he brought it over to my place to see how it threw. Bang. off the metal corner, into the outside of my thigh. I went down with only the handle and about 3/4 inch of the blade protruding. I learned several things.

Being stabbed HURTS.
Never trust an inexperienced thrower (i should have been behind a tree).
The SRK is a heavy knife, which penetrates flesh well....
The human body holds alot of blood
Health insurance is a GOOD THING.

Hey Howie...

Ouch!!!

I think a good Concealex sheath would be in order for that blade..

Hope you heal quick...

I've had worse wounds but the one that happened about 18 months ago was the most embarassing.
Was at a knife show and was looking at a mini cupid.OTF The guy told me to be careful, but I have been collecting knives for35 years and nobody is going to tell me how to handle a knife.Next thing I know the knife is sticking in my hand.Surprise.Went in about 3/4 of an inch into my left palm.Didn't say anything to anyone.Stuck my hand in my pocket.Ha Ha.Next thing it[my pocket]is full of blood.Very embarassing in front of my knife buddies. Will never live it down

Howie..the solution is either boot knife or neck knife or a slip sheath for your folder.

Great Horror stories Guys!
I haven't cut myself in years, but today I almost really cut myself. I usually have a CS serrated Voyager in my pocket, but today happened to have a plain blade. I sometimes have to cut the nylon straps that you pull tight. The serrated knife grabs and cuts them well. But the plain knife took alot of power to cut and then didn't want to stop until it was part way into my thumb. It made about a 1" cut that barely bled, but it was a healthy reminder. 1. use the right tool for the job and 2. don't get too complacent!
I had a good friend that was using a scalpel to cut nylon stitching on a parachute and ended up sticking it in his femoral artery! He calmly stuck his finger in the hole, like the little Dutch boy, and drove himself to the hospital!
It's important to remember that SHARP THINGS CAN CUT YOU!!!

OUCH!!! I cut the hell outta myself with my 1/2 serrated Spyderco Endura one time while opening a box. My index finder slid up on the serrations and sliced right down to the bare knuckle!!!
eek.gif
all I had to do was wash it out, and keep a TIGHT bandaid on it for a week.

Then, one time I was shaking the excess oil out of the end of my Spyderco Miliraty and hitting the pivot (hard) against my plam, which was covered by a hand towel. Well, I guess the oil was doing it's job (well) because when I looked up at the TV, BAM!!! The damned thing opened up, and 3/4" of the tip stabbed right through my right hand, between the middle, and ring finger. Blood shot across the hall!!!
eek.gif
I cleaned it out, wraped it with the towel, and held it above my head. Passed out while waiting for someone to come home to take me to the hospital.

Oh well, it healed just fine in a few days.

I've also sliced the end of my thumb REAL good with a Sebenza, accidentally been stabbed in the stomach with a phillips (#2) screwdriver, (the interchangable tip kind) adn my friend cut the CHIT outa himself on New Year's Eve on a bottle of Spumante'. Severed the secondary tendon in his pinky, and hit the primary one. I guess the pinky has two. Lucky him.

Well, after reading these accounts of close encounters of the metallic kind, I don't feel so bad for nearly slicing off the very tip of my thumb with a large Sebenza.

Geeeez! Safety first!

OK, now for my stint of stupidity.
I was sharpening a recurved blade Muela fighter on my Lansky when it slipped out of the clamp and went straight down into my right foot. I had to reach down and pull it out as the knife was standing straight up. Hurt like hell and bled like the proverbial stuck pig at the time, but, the next morning was when I really learned to appreciate what kind of pain a stab wound can inflict. I went to get out of bed and fell face first onto the floor as the immeddiate and overwhelming pain in my foot upon putting weight on it took my leg out from under me. OUCH!!! I ended up having to get a few stitches in the foot. Inside and out.

And that's only one of several such instances where complacency=pain when dealing with sharpened slivers of steel.

But, Tuff takes the cake on frequency of knife injuries in my book. How are ya healing anyway, Tuff?

My new bumper sticker:

Let me tell you about my SIFU!

So far, I have never been stabbed or stabbed myself
really brutally, but I once cut myself quite grievously
when opening a package of jeweler's rouge for polishing
a blade. These H&K Tantos are quite pointy.

The worst knife injury I had to endure, however,
was done by an Albanian trying to get at my purse.
The scar is the length of my forearm, and he partially
cut into my left hand.

Nonetheless, the Albanians knife proved to be this guy's
lifesaver - after I punched the guy straight into the throat,
a bystander turned out to be doctor and did
a coniotomy.

Hey Howie,

You have my sympathy, Been there done, that. While cutting thick leatherfor a sheath with a hand made scalpel (made from an old Ka-Bar) I slipped of the table and right into my thigh. (My daughter was playing behind me and distracted me). If you are going to do it, do it right! Straight through the artery, muscle and into the bone. Now, I know that you are not supposed to remove knives or objects ( expecially, when they are pulsing!)
However! You just can't leave it sticking out of your leg like that! Funny thing was it really didn't hurt when I did it! I was able to get my thumb down in the hole and get the bleeding under control till I got to the hostpital, a few stitches inside and out and I was on my way out the door. Being the tuff knifemaker I am, and considering it really wasn't hurting at the moment I turned down the pain killers that they offered. I must agree with Misque, You really don't fully apreciate the pain of a stab wound until the next day or two. And when they say stay off your leg, they mean it! I didn't! It bled out under the skin, looked real pretty! for months! Number one lesson learned, never be distracted while playing with sharp, pointy, objects. Number two a band saw works really well for cutting thick leather! Nice to know that you really tuff guys out there feel pain too, and it isn't just us women! By the way this is Audra Draper AKA (crazy woman knifemaker)

The only "stab" wound I can really count is getting shot with an arrow. While target shooting, I went to retreive my arrows from one of the targets, as I doing this my buddy was back at the line trying to tune his bow and accidentally let an arrow fly at the moment I turned around...It went through my lower lip, pass the teeth and stopped in the back of my neck. Not a pretty site, but It could have been much worse, an inch here or there and It would have been.

You guy's make my little stab wound seem like a pin prick! I was sanding a minature and not paying good enough attention when I drove the blade through my thumb. It went in one side and out the other, man did that hurt! Know what "sticks out like a sore thumb" means?

Hmm. Looks like I need to inflict some more damage upon myself if I'm gonna place anywhere near you guys. :::Gets 15" Ontario tanto...::: OW!!!!! Jeez! OK, I think I'll stop there.
