My Yellow Lab

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know it's very difficult. Prayers sent for you and your dog.

People say animals don't know... I think a lot of folks under estimate them.

The day Holley was put down, my wife went to Mc Donalds and got her a couple cheeseburgers. It was one of the few things she had eaten for days.

Plus she gave her a Hersheys chocolate bar. Even though dogs aren't suppose to have chocolate, at this point it didn't matter. She loved it

I sure miss her :(

He was outside today walking around as best he could and laying in the sunshine.
I came back from hiking with my other dogs and he was at the basement door, wanting in. I let him in and he lay on his mattress. Went back a hour later and he was stretched out on the floor breathing his last. So, I got a tarp and wrapped him in it, manged to get him in a wheelbarrow and take him to his grave and buried him. He was one of the best and smartest dogs I've ever known. I'll always remember him fondly. His name was Bigwig.

He did that one last favor for you, and relieved you of the anxiety of putting him down.
At least it sounds like his last day wasn't too bad, with one more look around his world.

Smoke goin up for you and Bigwig.....

I don't know what else to say

That's one of the hardest choices to make... I've had two wonderful dogs, had to put one down myself, and the other with a vet. Either way, it hurts... I've felt less bad about losing some relatives. Whichever choice you make, be comforted that it is not a kindness to extend your companion's life when they're suffering.

Sorry to hear this, Jill. I'm glad he went peacefully!

Thanks everyone, it helped to tell about it to people that are dog lovers.
Nobody in my family is nearly as much as I am.
We know when we get a pet we will lose it someday, but we still cherish the time we have with them. I'm just glad Bigwig had a good country life and was cared for. So many dogs never get a chance to enjoy their lives to the fullest.

My sincerest condolences, Jill.

I know how difficult it is to lose a companion and friend.

I have no words at times like these.
I hope you are ok and your memories are of all the good times with him, not this last day.

I went through the same thing last year. Having the vet administer the injection allowed me to hold my dog and ease his passing. One of the hardest experiences of my life.

I'm really sorry for your loss. He had to know he was loved, that's really all they want out of their lives.
Think I will get off here and go spend some time with mine.

Somebody gave me this poem when my first Lab died......

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Hope it helps some.

I'm sorry for your loss, Jill. I think a lot of us understand how hard it is to lose a pet. Every time I read threads like this I get teary eyed. Tonight the Knob Creek is for Bigwig You have my condolences.

I had to put my Rottie to sleep this past Friday. She was fine until about three weeks ago and then it went down hill. Finally got to the point she cound hardly go outside without laying down and resting for a while. It was all she could do to move around. The vet came to the house and put her to sleep and we burried her in the back yard. DAMN IT, I felt like crap and I miss that dog.

sorry about your friend jill. take some comfort that he does not feel any more pain and that his suffering has been eased. rest in peace Bigwig.

you don't happen to have some photos you can post of him do you?
