I ordered both serrated and non serrated ZDP 189 Enduras on a whim a little over a month ago. I figured, what the heck, I'll try this latest and greatest steel and see how it does...
They've both been EDC'ed since I got them. The plain edged one does the mundane sandwich, shoestring, letter opening, fingernail cleaining, etc. tasks of the day while the serrated model does the heavy grunt work.
The serrated model has made me change my stubborn ways. It's my favorite work knife on the North Slope. There's just no comparison when cutting ropes, chokers, boxes, etc.
I'm lovin' the ZDP-189 steel, although I can hardly view it as "stainless" my plain edged model is taking on a pretty darn nice patina infact!
It's one of the few newer steels I've seen come along that's lived up to it's hype for edge holding. When it's time to resharpen them, even that's not a big deal. I've screamed and cursed at alot more ATS-34 than I ever will this stuff. Although it is harder to sharpen, it yields a sweet reward when done.
The Endura 4 remodel is overall pretty impressive as well. I like the screws, and the liners. The new tip is a love/hate thing. I like it's sturdiness, but I wouldn't be opposed to a finer tip for splinter picking and such. The only thing I'm not digging at all is the pocket clip. too thin, too easily bent. I've already straightened the clips out on twice on my new knives. I'd really like to see a sturdier clip on my otherwise fine and much loved Endura's.
Since I've gotten those two I've put every other folder I own deep in the back of the gun safe. I'd forgotten what I was missing in the Endura!
In short, I just wanted to thank the Spyderco folks for a job well done.
