i got careless. whenever i know i have to go through an airport metal detector and x-ray machine in one of these dratted office buildings, i always leave my knife at home. well, i got used to the usual cursory pat-down for which they never find out i'm carrying.

but today, the guard insisted i take off my belt bag and run it through the x-ray. bingo! they found my endura. and i didn't have the option to just leave because this happened at the second layer of search deep inside the building. they told me i cannot retrieve my knife; that is has been confiscated, and is now building property. challenging that ruling will of course bring with it a charge of illegal carry.

and so i lost my favorite EDC.

Well, at least some guard got an early Christmas gift. Darn shame. Sorry for your run-in with the Federalies.

That is a very sad story. I sincerely feel for you..

I would like to know, what kind of building were you in? Was it a regular office type building, a high rise or government style building? What state? Why were they so darn anti-knife? Maybe the rest of us can learn from your unfortunate circumstance.

And I agree with Bear Claw, some asshole is wearing your knife right now. Maybe Santa can make things better for you soon??

I'd have broken the blade before turning it over...

Broke a bali before that some cop wanted to take, he didn't think it was worth taking with a broken blade though...

You always have the option to leave with your property unless you are being charged. That's the law.

I just got a ZDP-189 Endura last month. It has quickly become one of my favorite knives. I feel for you brother!

That's what I would think. If I were in the OP's shoes, I would look into the legality of them taking peoples' property - the security guard can't charge him with a crime, nor can the building owners, so that means it would be up to the police whether or not they want to charge the OP with a crime.

I never carry a knife with a blade of 4" or more (Missouri law) because of stuff like this, though...my luck I'd get caught with it in my pocket and the cop would be having a bad/boring day.

It wasn't confiscated, it was stolen.

I wish more people realized this.

Confiscate = Steal

As much as I disagree with some security measures, the rules are generally quite clear and readily available. Whether it's jury duty or catching a flight, it's your responsibility to know and follow the rules just as it's the responsibility of the guards to enforce them. It's nobody's fault but his own.

That being said, that's too bad you lost your knife. I nearly lost a Mini Grip after not doing my due diligence before attending a concert, it's not a good feeling.

This sums up my views, as well. Sucks that you lost the knife, but it wouldn't have happened if you'd paid attention and not carried it some place that disallows carry.

I'm not trying to stir up anything here, but I can't say I feel bad for you. From your post it appears you normally "sneak" it in knowing you are doing something wrong. You got caught this time and paid the price. It really does suck and I feel for you losing your Endura, but you were asking for it knowingly sneaking it in.

That's at the entrance. This happened inside at the second layer. It's a high-rise commercial building where one of the bigger banks is headquartered. Had I clipped it at my waist underneath my belt, it would have escaped. By the way, I'm in Makati, in the capital region of the Philippines. Knife laws vary by municipal government decrees, but lawyers tell me the national law here has always been fuzzy. In Makati, even a case peanut is considered a bladed weapon. I'm thinking of writing to the admins but my experience with those types is they go by the book when it comes to touchy things like a 4-inch blade that can split hair. Contrary to what I'm feeling right now, I hope whoever handles my knife knows what he/she is doing, and avoids getting cut.

As an aside I now better appreciate having a whole collection of knives. My 3.5-inch vg-10 caly in now with me. But I miss the endura.

That sucks, but just be thankful it wasn't a Sebenza, and that you didn't get locked up.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I guess things are different in the Philippines, but I would have flipped the F out and stormed out of there.
