I want to start trying to make mycarta or composit handle materials what ever I can call it anyway
I have a few ideas bear in mind I do mainly hidden tangs and have never worked with this stuff before
1. what if I layered my material like normal and where the blade would go put the blade their with a light coat of oil so you could take it out later pressed it like normal that way you would already have a perfect tight hole to put the stick in ;)
2. doing the same thing what if you rolled it around the tang and then pressed it
3.For the people who want to do scales what if I made a thin piece of mycarta as thick as the bade and cut it to fit the blade and glued it all up with the scales

just some Ideas I am throughing around as I was thinking about making the stuff maybe I have to much time on my hands:jerkit:

I always thought it would be neat to use different dry plants as a material, kinda like early papyrus.

hair, fur, other harder things like shells, and iv even thought of wood chips, nuts, small bones like fish vertebrae. dang, i just gave away all my "orriginal" ideas. oh well, just mention i gave you the idea when your famous and we'll call it even :)

How about using: different kinds of rope and thicknesses (like hessian or wrap paracord 'round a core and press it)? Brillo Pads (Bronze/Brass ones should look amusing)? Lace or doilies ? Different Carpet types? Fly-mesh?

I have seen a Ariel Salvierra cable knife with rope in clear epoxy that was friggin awesome!

JOE MARSILLO GET PICTURES!

Are epoxy and resin both good for making micarta?

Ive been wanting to use coconut fiber, but i dont know if it would look nice though.

I would think coconut fiber would look good.

I was wondering What kind of epoxy to use.
Would the epoxy that is used as a coating work? It is sold at Home Depot and Lowes with the poly and laquer. The stuff I am talking about comes in a quarts. Its a two part epoxy and hardener often used on bar tops.

I use a clear resin from a Marine company here in hawaii. The particular one is labeled casting resin and I use it to cast stuff.

I've been wondering about the resin question myself, based on what I've seen online, it it's using a fiberglass type resin(polyester I think) then it's technically G10, and if it's using a phenolic, it's Mycarta. I know where to get fuberglass resin as all the hardware store carry it and so do the Auto shops. I know nothing about phenolics, especially where to get them.

Does anybody know what the casting resins are?

And has anybody done a comparison of the types of resin available for home use for handle making?

I love the look of the homemade micarta's using fiberglass resin, but if one of the other readily available resins would work better, I'd be curious to know.

I'm not a chemist, so if we can get a lay person comparison, that would be great.

thank you

When I use casting resin it makes a fairly hard plastic like stuff. Im not sure how it would compare to acrylic, but not too far off.

I saw a knife where the guy used layers of denim from old jeans and it turned out amazing! This may be old news here, I wish I could remember where I saw it.

Yeah I've always liked the look of denim mycarta. I think it would be cool to do layers of black and blue denim. Someone with a setup should try it out. If it turned out good I'd buy some!

I was thinking of matching and stacking layers of camo so that when you shaped the handle the pattern would still match up.
