mycarta

Don't use Polyester resin (3M, Bondo, Elmers, etc) that you find at Home Depot, Lowes or the likes. It really makes awful micarta... IMO, of course.

If you must make your own, use a good two part epoxy such as West Systems. It's MUCH more durable and results in a higher quality, better looking end product.

JBC if you don't mind could you please elaborate? West systems makes many epoxies. Do you find one to be better for 'mycarta' material than the other? I do know that many reputable makers use the bondO brand in making their mycarta.

I've used 3M Poly and West Systems 105 Epoxy with paper and burlap... the West System produced a better overall final product that had less air bubbles and has proven to be more durable.

If you want the best quality micarta, leave it to the pros who use special phenolic resins and heat presses...

Thank you, I use west system Gflex on all my knives and love it, so I think I am more apt to give the WS 107 a shot. 99% of my knives are made with wood handles, but I was just going threw all of my old cloths and came across 12 pair of blue jeans. So I figured I would give a shot at denim micarta.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. Ya, I have yet to make any and will continue to buy from dealers. I am more interested in making liners opposed to the entire scale. Thanks again.
