Myke Hawke picks the "best" multitool.

I saw this one when it first aired on UK TV, it's from a program called "the Gadget Show". I've no idea who Myke Hawke is but I suspect I'd get irritated by him pretty quickly. As others have already said "best" is so subjective and situational it's just not realistic to come up with a definitive top 5.

4 of them are at least quality tools, but even the guys at Gerber would have to admit the Suspension is pretty poor.

Interesting guy, Mr Hawke. His Jungle survival show on Discovery was pretty interesting. Other then that... well I know NOTHING...NOTHING.... :)

The Suspension isn't a great tool, the blades/saw are far too short to be all that useful. That being said, out of all the MT's I have, that is my wife's favorite. Fits her hand better then any other. I have a couple of them, I give to the kid or hiking partners when they ask to borrow my "Insert LM/SOG/VIC name here". I have used the Gerber 400 and the Suspension a bunch of times and in each case (for me anyways) they got the job done, but it was ugly.

The only thing the Powerlock has going for it is the pliers and that isn't too great because the gears make the pliers open twice as wide. The sog implements are a joke as well. If SOG is such a good knife company then why do they're MTs have the worst blades. Gerber tools even have better blades.

Top 5:
1: SOG Powerlock
2: Leatherman Charg AL
3: Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier
4: Buck X-tract LED
5: Victorinox Swisschamp XAVT

Interesting. The X-Tract seems to be a particularly unpopular tool on this forum.

I wonder if they tested any of the Swisstool/Spirit variants.

I wish I had more information about what they actually tested and what they didn't like. Is there more information about this elsewhere on the internet?

One from each manufacturer. Those picks are for sponsorship and advertiser endorsements.

Really... hmmm, I actually like my PowerLock quite a bit. Not too fond of the Gerber Suspension tools/blades at all. They are ok on the 400 and others.

I respect everybody's opinion, but I like my Powerlock. I might agree on a more stout main blade, but it came sharp and cuts very well. The SOG is a bit heavier, but it rotates with my wave on usage.

i never use the blades on my multi-tools anyway... and on my Wave and Charge both i've opened the PE blade to find it rolled from getting smashed closed (i'm assuming)

i had no idea how it happened on the Wave, but kinda figured it out after wiping out on a scooter and destroying the sheath on my Charge then later finding the 154CM blade rolled

i don't think the SOG is going to have the same problem if i ever do need to use the much harder to get to blade, but i do love the pliers and the V-Cutter

My old style wave serves me well.

I'm starting to like "Myke" and Ruth. Maybe he is not as much of a dillweed as I first thought. Aside from shaving his body and talking with an artificially deep voice, he's all right. He treats Ruth well, and that goes a long way with me.

This is the most ridiculous test I've ever seen. I find it pretty humorous that the number one requirement was rapid deployment AND the PowerLock came in first! Not to mention the Suspension was third and it's garbage

I like Myke and Ruth, too. She's a tough cookie to go through some of the survival scenarios they put them in. They had a rough time in Alaska, though, and if it were a real survival situation, they probably would not have made it out alive.

Rapid deployment is the MOST important factor in a multitool? Wouldn't be my first or most important criteria item.

And I must learn to say M tool, that just sounds so cool and eliminates that pesky extra syllable.

LMAO!!:D Actually carrying around a barbecue grill that needs assembly is the most important factor in choosing a M TOOL(see how cool it was to say M TOOL!!:barf:)
although the video was very informative as to who was more annoying, the interviewer or MIKE, I decided both were equally annoying, now if you will excuse me I have to go carry around my barbecue for a few days and then use my m tool to assemble it..one again very useful stuff from mike:jerkit:

...have used all 5...all 5 are ok multitools; don't think one is that much better than the other (yeah, EVEN the gerber, it's ok)...love the pliers on the sog...

i own a wave and an x-tract...i use the buck the most; the wave not so much...

?? the first test was good the rope cut test was stupid for real seeing as all blades from factory should be razor sharp

I was thinking along those same lines, he's called in help to bail them out twice from what I've seen and both cases it was were Ruth was in need. I think his voice comes from the fact he's got a really bad southern drawl without consciously trying to sound superior. But then again it's just a guess.

thanks for posting the link. ...interesting final order. I always found my rotation to fit me well and serve all that I asked of it. ( Ti Charge-S30V, Swisstool Spirit S and the Leatherman Wave w/added 154cm blade)

Be well,

Jules

The Powerlock is the highest performance multitool I've owned, for sure, followed by Leatherman. I'd put the Gerber Diesel on the bottom below the 1.99 Cabela's wannabe Clutch deal...

Funny... I got a buddy of mine that would give up his first born or his 07 Vette before he would his Diesel I gave him. He has a bunch of LM he use to carry, but the Diesel is by far his favorite MT to date. (He teaches auto mechanics at a local college, ASE certification and such). I gave it too him because I didn't like it much either. He said he hasn't touched his Surge or Wave since.
