Mysterious scratched bolsters...

A lightbulb finally went off today and I thought I would share it with you guys who may be in the same position as me.

I keep my knife in my left pocket. The only other thing that ever goes in there is my Blackberry that rides in a leather cover. Forever, I have not been able to figure out why I get scratched bolsters when the knife is carried in that pocket. I have tested every surface of the leather phone pouch, that's not it. I thought maybe I had some small abrasive particles in my pants pockets but after turning them inside-out, could never notice anything. Today, I reached into my pocket and what is the first thing that comes into contact with my knife......MY WEDDING RING! Now, if the ring was gold, I'd probably be okay. But, the ring is made of tungsten, much harder than the stainless steel used on knife bolsters. DAMN! Well, at least I have figured it out. Looks like I'll have to rearrange my pockets from now on. I just thought I would share in case any of you may be having the same problem.

Are you left handed?
I like to keep my knife in the pocket nearer my dominant hand, for me, my right.

Same thing happened to me, my wedding band is Ti, scratched up a Case mini trapper bolster I had riding in weak side pocket of my Carhartt.

I'm right handed but my keys go in my right pocket. Like I said, I may have to switch things up a bit. :o

You are waaayyyy too uptight about these scratches on the bolsters. Unclench. They happen. They lend character and nobody respects a pretty-boy knife. :D

Get divorced.

Now that's forward thinking right there.:)

I carry a knife in my right front pocket along with my change and a set of keys and I carry another knife in my left front pocket with another set of keys. No discrimination against objects I own for me. They all get mixed together. Heck, I even leave some of my knives out in the rain sometimes.

I gotta go along with "comoha". How can you prove to someone that the knife you're so proud of is your EDC if you don't have any scratches on it?

How bout posting some pictures of your knife.

If I carry a knife (as opposed to keep it in a safe), I don't mind if it gets scratched.

my wedding ring is tungsten. My wife has bought me some mighty fine knives. I guess I will have scratched bolsters.

My tungsten wedding ring is too smooth to scratch anything, but a lot of the time my knife rides with my keys anyway.

I know what you mean about the scratches guys. I'm not terribly uptight about scratches, it just irks me a little when I've been carrying a knife for a few days, have hardly used it at all, and it already looks like I've kicked it across a gravel road.

It's one that I just received from Jim Moyer in ATS-34 and ironwood. It's a pretty one. I'll try to get some pictures and post them.

Agreed, they can't stay mint, pristine forever, unless ya never carry 'em.:D

I have an old Schrade whittler in my right pocket with car keys and a silver dollar. In my left pocket is a Case/Bose Arkansas hunter and a GEC cattle knife and 3 pens and another set of keys. When I'm standing around I continually finger all this stuff and roll it around like it's in a washing machine. An, doggone it, the whittler is even showing some serious blade wear!!:eek:

Don't sweat it. Sooner or later your bolsters will be quite evenly scratched and they'll match just fine.

Throw in a few stones in there so you can get that nice stonewashed/tumbled finish! ;)

I have in the past taken scotchbrite and just run it across shiny new bolsters to give them a brushed finish to help hide scratches. Recently, I have really taken an interest in shadow patterns to avoid the whole thing with bolsters getting scratched.

Here it is. A crappy phone pic will have to work for now until I get home.

i got a nice ding on my burnt stag GEC from keys. Really shows up as a bright spot on the scales so i went to wrapping it in a hanky to protect it better. My bolsters are still nice because of this. Only downside is it takes a bit longer to retrieve my knife.

Crossada, the handkerchief idea is actually excellent. It also keeps the knife from slipping out and being lost when you find yourself crawling around on the floor or whatever.
