If you remember last Friday something like this appeared on the Fiddleback Friday Thread.

2015 0424 29 – Mystery knife - $330.

Well a box arrived today and the mystery is solved-- Kind of:

It looks like this:
Box%2520Elder%2520Burl1-XL.jpg

Then I opened it and it looked like this:

Box%2520Elder%2520Burl3-XL.jpg

Then I looked closer and it looked like this:

Box%2520Elder%2520Burl4-XL.jpg

Then I got really close and it looked like this:

Box%2520Elder%2520Burl5-XL.jpg

And then I noticed how tapered the tang was when I saw this:

Now, the question I have is what is it. I'm horrible with model ID and I think it may be a Terrasauer or a Leuku, but it seems small for a Leuku. Any help appreciated.

Nice. Looks like it nipped you a bit on the finger. The ones that bite are usually keepers

I got stupid with my drill press on Tuesday and tried to clamp down some micarta and G10 with my fingers while trying to drill through it with a 5/16 bit. Thank the Lord I had the speed dialed down. It hurt like hell, but didn't look too bad until yesterday around noon when it let loose and a ton of gunk came out and it started oozing. I had to trim the skin flaps and it seems to be getting better.

Bottom line, respect your power tools. I used to be a safety freak, but I'm slipping now that I'm no longer in the Navy and need to take a round-turn on my shop practices.

yep, red liner. Looks stunning. Very nice indeed. Now I need to go make a striker to compliment it's good looks. Unfortunately my 11 y/o daughter is making paper right now, so I'm trying to contain the inevitable carnage that happens when water, pulp and screen is combined by an evil art genius.

Looks like a Recluse in Box Elder Burl and A2 steel to me.

Nailed it. Nicely done.

Get vise grip style drill press clamps. Those and a simple stop post will make that tool so much safer for you.

No more helicopters!

Edit
So are you happy with our choice?

And thanks for the firesteel.. It'll make its debut soon

I felt so dumb when it happened, because I knew better and even had a piece of wood backer in the drill press vise. Like the sticker on my motorcycle speedo says, "Stupid Hurts"

I do like your selection. Very much so. Thanks!

I tried to make the firesteel less prone to misplacement and loss.

Awesome
Ken and I were hoping so. We were kinda worried that if we didn't get it right and you felt slighted or thought it sucked the "mystery knife" would be a complete bomb and never heard from again. With the positive feedback it has a chance to reappear from time to time

And yes lol this firesteel is a bit harder to misplace

Man, this was really fun for me. Thanks Swonut!

This reminds of the time a Big John Studd looking guy on a job site tried to drill into a 4x4 junction box cover with a unibit with nothing but his hands holding the drill and the cover. It was all gravy until the teeth of the bit grabbed. Helicopter right into his palm. You could see his tendons and all. We told him-- "Bro, you need medical attention". He just wrapped his hand in a t-shirt and finished the day.

Imagine this slicing through your palm...

The Recluse is awesome. I have one in tapered 3/16 that is beautiful and a real workhorse to boot.

I had an apprentice do the same thing a couple of years ago, although the outcome wasn't as bad, it was still nasty. We even had a vice mounted to the back of the van he could of used.

That Recluse is really sweet! Just don't let Bud see it:)

lol .. too late .. and that IS a niiiice one. Red liners (rare) are killer!!
But - I already have a pretty sweet BEB Recluse so I'll keep my desires and goals set to getting other models in BEB.
