Got off of work early today so decided to try something. I have plenty of steel pallet bands along with old bandsaw blades laying around, so I decided to cut them up for a small billet. I was finally able to create the W!
As excited as I am to see this, I was also curious on the steel. Surprised with the quick etch I gave it how distinct the pattern is. Im guessing the bandsaw blades are left silver? Was just curious on that.
Anyways, since I don't know the steels used and how to properly HT them, I think I will use this for a set of bolsters or something.

The bandsaw blades are probably something like 15N20, so that will be the brighter of the steels. Looks cool!

Thanks. I think I might fold it one more time before it's final shape. Should make a cool set of bolsters.

As a guess use 15N20 and 1095 as the steels. HT for the 1095.

Test separately the bands and the sawblades, than draw your conclusions and ht the billet (the blade of course). You could do a san mai if the damascus won't harden
Nice W!!!

The good thing is that from 1060 to 1095, the HT is pretty much identical. 15N20 uses the same basic range, too. After welding up a "W" billet, the carbon content is probably fairly uniform and in the eutectic area or a tad below that. I would use 1500F austenitization, a 10 minute soak, fast quenchant, and a 425-450F temper ( depending of planned use).

Thanks. Maybe I'll put together a bigger billet this weekend and try it out.
