Mystery Ranch or Kifaru

I just got back (Sat) from a two week trip in India and used a Camelback Trizip which is designed off of the Mystery Ranch 3DAP.

<snip>

I don't really need any more packs but if I get another it will be a Mystery Ranch.
If you liked the Camelback why switch to the MR?

Ok, I made up my mind. I have decided I am going to get the Kifaru longhunter, I am still undecided as to which one to get, the standard or the guide? I still have to decide if I should get camo or foliage green? I am leaning more toward the longhunter guide in foliage green as the price is only $40 more and I get almost 2000 cu cm more space and the foliage green appeals to me more. I am going to get the complete package which will give me every optional accessory that I can get. If anyone has anymore input please let me know as this will be a $900 order and I want to make the right choice, at this price this will be the end of my packs and I don't want to screw this one up.

You might look at the EMR on the military pack side. I believe it is made of stronger fabric, and has the molle loops so modular pockets, etc can be attached. Same pack more features, but heavier.

Arc'teryx's Naos 85 is made in Vancouver, BC. That, my friend is a very high-end pack. Comes in a charcoal grey - perfect for a hunter - and because it's waterproof, it'll clean-up easily after a hunting trip. These are tough packs and the h20-proof design is absolutely fantastic. Many of Arc'teryx's products are made in Canada [the expensive ones anyway]. Should ring-in around your budget.

I've had an Arcteryx Khazri 55 Long now for a couple of years that was meant to replace my 20 year old MEC North Twin. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Arcteryx, and their high end models are made in Canada.

:) Like I said IF I get another. Course gear for me is like crack so...

The Trizip is the only camelback pack with the MR harness system. They're the only ones I know of doing packs this size with an adjustable harness system. IF I get another pack it wont be without an adjustable harness.

The smaller "Linchpin" also uses a MR harness.

Thanks! That one must be new. When I was looking and bought mine (just before Shot Show) the trizip was the only one. Hopefully they'll put one in the 3000 ci range out.

Sorry, I have yet to own a Kifaru, mostly because they are custom built to order and take 6-8 weeks. I'm sure they are very good, though, and I think eventually I will get one.

Mystery Ranch (MR) packs are great. I have the 3 Day Assault Pack (3DAP), Cerberus, and Behemoth packs. I trust pretty much anything from MR because it's Dana Gleason's current company (as previously mentioned), and still designed and made in the USA.

Also, have you considered Eberlestock? I have the Eberlestock F4 Terminator. It is awesome, and has more than enough room to haul anything. I think I only paid like $400 for it, brand new, and it arrived within days.

I'm not a fan of "lightweight" packs, either, so the weight of any of these packs doesn't bother me in the least. I agree the 5.11 packs are pretty sub-par. I love the Maxpedition stuff. Even though they are not really a full-size backpack manufacturer, they make some awesome gear.

And finally, the Canadian Arc'Teryx makes some of the absolute best hiking, climbing/mountaineering technical packs (and other gear) in the world. They are my absolute favorite of the "civilian" type packs. I don't have any of their LEAF (Law Enforcement and Armed Forces) line yet, but I can't imagine how their Echo 60 pack could ever let anyone down. Maybe that's next on my list to get...

Well, I just placed the order but I lied in my previous post about deciding to get the Kifaru. I went with the Mystery Ranch Grizzly in foliage green. I really hope I won't be disappointed. I looked at the Arc'Teryx at wholesale sports and I must say they are great packs and I will get one but for hunting I don't know if they really fit the bill for me.
