Mystery Rivet

Can someone please explain the purpose of the rivet on the velcro'd grip retention strap on the ESEE 3/4 MOLLE back. This is a holed rivet, not a male/female retention snap. Apparently I am not intelligent enough to figure it out. Thanks.

Maybe its so you can attach a length of paracord to the holed rivet and open the retention strap even quicker....?
