Just got analysis back... you've heard this story before I'm sure, guy who works in a shop gives you a piece of steel "it's good steel, tool steel, really hard" and then... mild. That's happened to me a lot.

Well this time I wrote the manufacturer and he told me it was mild steel... but I hardened it to about RC61 in water, so I got an analysis 'cuz I'm stubborn. Turns out it was 1045, perfect for some breaching tools I've been working on.

The other sample was pretty classic 15N20 with 2.524 Ni, a 54" round blade that will furnish material for a year, but the last one is a bit confusing, also a large saw blade but older...

C 0.90 Mn 0.300 Si 0.315 Cr 0.276 Ni 0.549

If anyone can ID that last alloy and maybe some Heat treat data that would be wonderful, thanks.

Well to me it sounds like a basic but modified W-grade with Ni added to aid in toughness. The Ni content is whats interesting to me. Some W-grade steels can be hardened over 60Rc but have very low heat resistance, so I am not sure if it would be used for a saw blade.

Mostly just a guess-
