Hey everyone. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend! I attended the NECKA spring Hammer In in Dartmouth MA. , on Saturday and had an awesome time!! Learned a few new tricks and tips, picked up some supplies at a good price, had some great home made food, and spent a LOT of time talking blades :D Can't wait till the next one!! I hope to have a GOOD knife finished by then ;) Also wanted to take a second to thank everyone for there time and effort they put into making it possible.

I did notice at this weekend ,however, that very few people there were flat grinding. If anyone out there has a good resource for tips about the subject , mabye a demo, etc. I would love to hear about it. So far, most of my flat grinds turn out almost the same thinkness on the spind as the cutting edge!!! :o

And remember , Memorial Day is more then a good time for a cookout, and a day off. Remember all those serving in the forces and who have served.

And have a cookout.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Ultrex21

Sounds like the hammer-in was a great time. I'm a bit bummed I couldn't make it but hopefully I'll get to the next one. It's good to see some more hammer-ins being held up here in the Northeast.

The hammer In was a blast wasen't it... i just got done hammering my wire damascus into a bar. Flat grinds hmm. i dont know much but i do know this forum has a great search engine. just type in flat grind and a bunch will pop up im sure. by the way you might wanna put some info in your profile so we know who you are. well atleast so ill know who you are ;)

see you next hammer in im sure

Ultrex,
Welcome to the forums. Vinny has some good advice...put more info in your profile so we know who you are.

If you want you can stop by my shop sometime and I'll give you a few pointers. First thing I would say is you need to apply more pressure towards the cutting edge and less to the spine. Pretend your grinding a wedge.

Glad you had a nice time at the hammer-in.

I live one town east of Dartmouth in New Bedford and I basically do all flat grinds. You should stop by sometime and I'll show you how to do it.

Thanks for the tips, and Invite's guys. I am going to try to grind a few of the same blades this week and see if i cant get a bit more of a bevel going!!! If not, is there a demand for high carbon, hardened rulers?

Ultrex you can see you'll have all the help you'll need,,
the only difference in flat grinding is hollow grinding is harder:D
but take that with a grain of salt :) .. because it all boils down to what you are most use to.. a lot of us can and will do both with no problem

at the next Necka H/I grab me and I'll show you.. don't be shy at these things if you want to find out something just ask, if one of us doesn't know something someone else will, we'll make sure you get the info and hands on you need..
welcome aboard :D
