I'm currently new to buying knives. I've only purchased a Kershaw Blackout 1550ST and Skyline Damascus. Do you guys use every knife you buy, or do you buy some just to collect? I'm thinking of not using my Skyline Damascus.

If I heard correctly, Kershaw uses decent quality carbon Damascus for the blade, so it will be a perfectly fine user, so long as you keep it oiled and maintained.

I get all knives to be used. Buying a knife to collect it and not use it is like buying a car to not drive it. Some people do it, but I find that kind of stupid. Don't get me wrong, there are knives that are too rare to use, but I avoid those (mainly because I am usually flat broke). Get normal knives, and use them. There is a certain joy gotten from sitting down and just stropping all of your knives once in a while.

Well, there are collectors, accumulators, users, and hoarders. :)
Collectors usually purchase custom/handmade knives from a few makers. Many of them range in the $1,000s of dollars range.
Accumulators usually buy knives (production, midtech, and some custom), and use some, not others.
Hoarders are folks that buy a bunch of knives, usually production level and relegate them to non use and only handle them or "playing".
Users mostly carry and use their knives, many if not all.

These are my general definitions, some may agree or not. ;)

Huh, I guess I'm an accumulator... I'd label myself a user, but I got so many blades at any given time, I only have so many things to cut in a given day!

I accumulate knives with the intention of using them. I have a few that are still BNIB just because I don't rotate my knives as much as some guys. I have like three that I choose between and the rest are staying in the box until something happens to one of the others. They aren't expensive knives either I just figure if they're gonna sit around waiting they might as well stay new. If I tossed the boxes they'd probably get beat up any time I had to move them and the boxes allow me to stack them neatly.

Oh you could call me a hoarder alright. I only carry and use one knife, my CF154 Blur. That, and my Leatherman. I've got about 30-35 more Kershaws sitting in my storage case, with a nice collection of Skylines.

I'm an accumulator. If it were me, I'd buy a regular Skyline to use, oil that damascus beauty, & park her on my folding knife stand to be admired. I use a sprint AFCK, so I can be inconsistent as hell, though.

Do whatever you like, dude! It's all cool.

Okay. I'm going to use what I buy.

(Why do I want to buy all these knives?)

:)

If you can answer that question, you'll graduate from n00b to guru.

I'm still asking myself why I "need" all of the knives I own (and keep buying). Then something shiny (and sharp) distracts me and I'm back to my happy place :)

Seriously, it's crazy how this bug just caught me...

I can't take credit, but it fits:

One of us...One of us...One of us.

Wait until you're sitting there, trying to talk yourself into spending 300 on a knife, because, well, the last one was 255, and it's not that much more....

i was going to ask a similar question, but did a search cause i figured it had been asked before.

i'm still trying to figure out if i want to be a collector or a user. in only a few months i've managed to start a pretty decent collection (in my eyes) and i have a few knives that i can't bring myself to carry and use, but I feel like i'm wasting them by just letting them sit there.

for example, i just got a black PM2 DLC today. I know this is not an expensive knife to a lot of people, but to me it definitely is. It's not a sebenza or a fancy custom, several thousand dollar knife, but it's enough that I can't just buy a new one every week. With all the talk lately of how there is a shortage of these knives and the demand is so big, I feel like its a "rare" knife even though you probably couldn't really classify it is as that. It's so friggin nice and just awesome looking that I don't want to scratch it, so I'm labeling it as a collector's item. But on the other hand, it's such an incredible knife that it would be shame to not use it, enjoy it, and appreciate it.

i think a lot about things like, well if i use it, will i one day look back and wish i kept it in a safe to pass along to my kids or sell it as an investment? or if i save it, will i look back and think why didn't i use this bad boy and learn to appreciate what an incredible tool it is??

I'm a user and sometimes an accumulator.
I love to use my knives, see the marks they get, appreciate the fine cutting power they provide, etc.
Makes them even more fun for me.

Use it. You will not regret it at all. If you take care of it, you can sell it if you needed to. Even used you could get most of your money back from it. And if you don't sell it, it should last long enough to pass it to your kids.

Win win in my book.

Seriously, it is an environmental thang, your being from east Texas and all.:D All that nice timber and brush, and Leroy n them all carrying knives. Don't fight it, it is futile. Just sit back and enjoy this "Disease". Once diagnosed, there is no known cure. Just buy another knife to ease the symptoms. At least you don't have to go to meetings other than hang out here on the forum.
"Hello, My name is Omar, and I am a knifenut". (Transplanted Texan by the way)

Blessings,

Omar

I think this is pretty much the best answer to this "knife addiction" thing that keeps coming up with the newer folks. Mind if I sig this?
