What is the scoop on this N690 steel?

Anyone had a knife experience with it cutting, edge holding?

Hossom designs in Ontario knife folders are using it?

so far as I am aware it is cobalt enriched so it should have the same qualities as VG10 (biting edge, ease of sharpening, reasonable edge holding and wear resistance) If considering only stainless steels, replace reasonable with very good

I have it on my Extrema Ratio Gollum and I think its very good. Holds a great edge.

Great for EDC. N690 drop point blade.

I find it odd the when knife buyers are looking for the top of the line steels in their premium knives that Ontario and Spyderco stray from them.

I think most are looking for CM154, S30V, S90V, CPM3V, CPM10V or D2, A2 at the present time.

So why when they team up with Hossom design to build and market a high end knife they go with an unknown steel but want high end money for it strange.

Because the knives are made in Italy. The steels you mention are American, not European. N690 is a European high tech stainless.

N690 is not unknown. We've known N690 since Extrema Ratio made their knives out of it, and they are tough and sharp. As others have said, the knives are made in Italy, where they are more familiar with it, being an Austrian steel -- right next door. :)

Part of the problem is, the latest high-end steel gets the conversation. Unknown (to you) does not mean it's a poor choice. You didn't mention VG-10, one of the best steels on the market. Some great steels just get taken for granted.

Jerry Hossom would not have gone for it if he didn't think it was good stuff. :D

I have a Benchmade Monochrome 10300. Is get a very fine edge. It takes a bit longer than to sharpen than most steels but that's ok. As far as I can tell is that is cost more than 440C. Kinda funny how I picked up my benchamade for 20 bucks

my friend's benchmade pika 2 has held a really good edge with N690...it's not bad at all

I'm pretty sure he knows how the steel performs by now, haha.

You realize this thread started 9 years ago and hadn't been posted in since 08 right.

Since that time Dave Curtiss and many others have put N690 to good use. Some describe it as VG10 on steriods. I think it holds and edge well but not great and sharpens up very easily. It is a great steel for someone how like to use a strop for upkeep.

He's trying. Everyone yelled at him for making a new thread every time something popped in to his brain so now the answer is apparently digging up zombie threads from 9 years ago.

Can't win them all.
