Naked or Clothed?

Hi Corduroy!

As you said bead-blasting opens the knife; you are right but doesn't that mean, that if you keep your blade well oiled it takes the oil better and therefore protects the blade?

I think some knifemakers are bead-blasting there blades and then polish them again which results in a very nice finish.

I don't own any knives with coated blades, probably never will. Maybe if I wanted a knife with a tool steel blade but there are none on my wish list at the moment. I will never again buy a knife with a bead-blasted blade. I explained why in this thread. I do like the mirror finish on my Moran but a satin finish is easier to maintain.

Hmmm, I'm a little stunned at the answers given so far! I figured the majority preferred coated blades over uncoated from past posts and reviews here at these forums and other forums as well. Must have figured wrong!

Like I said, most knives look better with satin finish blades, but after owning and using my MicroTech SOCOM M/A now, coated is the way to go, at least for me!

On certain knives such as the SOCOM, a black blade with a black handle really looks neat, too. Makes the eyes of some who don't know much about knives really open wide when pulling an all black knife out. Don't know why an all black knife looks scarier than a satin blade with a black handle. Both can still do the same job! I guess I love seeing eyes bug out when pulling out one of these kind of knives.

NO, I'm not sadistic either!

My new BM #910SBT will only be my 3rd black blade knife I have ever purchased for myself so far.

I want a Light Saber.

Well, being a soldier, and abusing everything I touch, I MUST have my blades coated or 'blasted. Mirror finishes attract attention. So do Satin finishes. This is a bad thing.
As for "problems" with rust on beadblasted blades...Hel-lo people, take care of your knives!! A little TLC goes a LONG way. This is not an attack or a flame, just MHO.

I'm looking for a coating like the "Kings New Clothes".

A clear rust preventive coating.

I've gone from being a Black T guy to satin: hate the beadblast finish; steel is the name of the game, let's see it in all its beauty!

I've also found I tend to take better care of the clear steel blades; might be just mental but I find myself inspecting them closer and more often than the coated blades.

(I still shudder when I look at the k-dex scratches on my mirror-finish Moran FB1)
