I don't know how I did it, but I did what I thought would be impossible:

I killed my Nalgene bottles.

Yep, dunno if it was the heat in the car that did them in or what, but I went to put water in them and it just poured out through the bottom seams.

I guess that means I now have an excuse to buy some of the stainless ones.

Were they the lexan ones or the milky-white ones?

I had a milky one fail after using it on a winter camping trip where I used it as a hot water bottle several times. I think that going from very cold to very hot several times weakened it and made it eventually crack.

Killed my Nalgene too...forgot it in the freezer as ive done many times before with Nalgene bottles, but this time i was bored, so i got my knife and started chopping away at the ice...And then it gave a pop and this happened :D

I put mine in the freezer without problems .Did you leave some space for expansion ?

By the looks of it...apparently not :)

I have one of the new BPA-free 32 oz and a Nalgene stainless. Both great bottles.

Nope, when i pulled it out, it bulged a little but had no cracks. Only when i unscrewed the lid and started to chop away. I guess there must have been alot of built up tension in the lexan, and it broke at the sudden impacts.

I have another narrow-mouthed Nalegen bottle, and ive forgotten that one many times in the freezer, with no room left for expansion...it looks abit deformed but no cracks.

No biggie, ill get a new one.

If you want to buy more that are not stainless, check out a TJ Maxx if there is one close. I picked up several bottles a couple of weeks ago for less than half price.

Dang man that ain't no easy feat. I did it once at a 9 story library stairwell and it finally broke after filling it. That is odd that the heat did it.

I broke a ton of the lids, but the lexan survived pretty well for probably 10 years or so.

I finally ponied up for a couple 40 oz Klean Kanteens, no more plastic taste. I still have a few 'genes on backup duty though.

yea i mean, come on. anything can break if you try hard enough, or don't take good care. nalgenes are some of those things that are just harder to break.

they have a great track history of being extremely durable bottles, especially for their light weight, being inexpensive, and readily available.

you can buy stainless steel bottles and if you continue to treat them poorly they will just be dinged and scratched and (perhaps) even get punctured just the same.

i have both lexan and SS bottles and have received high quality service from both, and nothing bad to say about either.

and what's best is, choose nalgene or SS, you win (saving money) and the earth wins (less waste). so high fives all around!

I have three original nalgene (lexan) bottles that have been filled with boiling water and frozen solid many times. It has scars from being bounced off of rocks etc. They were indestructible as far as I could figure. Incredible little pieces of work. I have never had one fail as of yet and they still do duty for me all the time.

One of the best investments and best spent dollars I have ever done.

The newer formula ones ("non-bpa" everyday series) aren't as tough as the originals. I have seen VERY few originals fail but since the new ones have come out I know several people that have broken them treating them like the old ones.

Besides the weight I do really like my stainless ones and I stocked up on some of the older ones before they completely went away.

My step daughter killed her SIGG bottle by putting it the freezer. After I told her 4 hours previously not to put it in there. Repeatedly.

My Nalgene bottles have survived a lot---high-velocity throws from the top of mesas and cliffs in New Mexico, to thorough examinations by bears, to dropped dumb bells in the weightroom. They've survived so far with nary a crack...but obviously they weren't subjected to the temperature extremes as the cases stated. Nalgene makes a pretty bulletproof product that is useful and looks cool.
I'll have to try the stainless products.
