Good day all,

I am a newbie in the knife making scene, and thoroughly enjoying the shaping of my blades.

I do however have a question on ethcing vs. stamping, i dont like the look of the stamping of knife maker logo and prefer etching. Someone knifemaker however advised me to stay away from etching as it doesnt always look professional and can ruin a blade. Any comments fews?

Can someone also please post or tell me where i can find a step by step on etching? The site is great but the search function sucks.

Regards from sunny south africa.

Here's another link with lots of good information.

Either a stamp or an etch will look very good when done right - and very bad if done wrong (or if 'oops' is involved).

I choose etching because it is easy to change or adapt to different needs

"30 Years of Service" "July 15, 2007"

and some of the exotic monograms customers like.

It's good to hear you are feeling the pride in your work to inspire your mark. Congrats.

Rob!

Thanks for all the help guys, hope to post some blades in a month or two, have 3 that is between 60-80% done.....

Great people on teh site that is always helpfull......

Hi, I love my etch and think etching looks much better than many stamps I've seen. If you don't have a good, sharp stamp it shows. If your stencil sucks, you can often work it out and start over with a new stencil, unless you etch very deep. I think they look quite professional.

From a weakening the knife perspective, you have a choice to etch, mark and etch, lightly etch/mark or even just mark. You can easily "disrupt" less of the blade than with a stamp, although I don't believe that either is a serious concern.

I bought mine from IMG electromark after much poking and prodding from Mike Fitzgerald (fitzo above). I'm glad I bought them over making my own.
