My wife and I have a bet on what kind of critter did this. The benchmade is just for scale, it's about 7 inches long. Marks are about 2 feet off the ground, tree is thinner than it looks, only a couple inches in diameter.

So what's your guess?

Looks pretty fresh. What time of year was the picture taken? It looks a little weird for a buck rub, so I'm thinking black bear.

Cat Scratch Fever!! Claw marks look a little thin to be bear... I would guess a kitty cat of some kind or another. Got Bobcats in the area?

Or it could be a Chupacabra...

looks like my last girlfriend was there recently, Yikes! If you told me the height was less than 4 ft off the ground I'd have to go bear cub or bobcat myself. Also depends where you are since most northern black bears are still denned up and the youngin's would be too small to do that this time of year IME.

my votes on a bobcat...bears will as far as I understand usually try to reach as high as they can up a tree to mark there terriotory and to try and make the seem as big as possible ..The height you say this is would make me think bobcat...

Did you look around on the ground for tracks / foot prints? Pat

Looked for other sign but didn't really pick anything up but some deer track.

We were thinking either bobcat or bear. I am in North Carolina, and it is about the time black bear start roaming around again. My first thought was a black bear cub since it was so low to the ground. Black bear do frequent this area, they have been seen walking down the middle of my road many times, and have eaten lunch out of my garbage can more than once. By the way, that tree is about 50 yards off my back deck!

This years yearling cubs will just be being sent packing by Mom. 70 -90 lbs and not quites sure about where food comes from.
