Name this knife!

Tony,

ITS A SECRET!!!! hahahaha... JK!

I had to cut the spine off with a thin cutoff wheel while I had a helper slowly spray it down with water as I was cutting. I was planning on grinding it off with a belt grinder at first. But I decided against it because it would take forever trying to grind away so much metal while keeping the blade cool.

I then took it to the grinder to straighten it out after cutting off the thick 1/4+ spine. I was gonna leave it at that after I straightening, beveling, and polishing the spine. I took it out for a few quick swings and decided that it was still not as fast as I wanted it.

So I went back to the grinder to put on the false edge. I reprofiled the edges with a 500AO belt when I was finally happy with the feel of the whole blade. I finished off the edge with 1500Sic then stropping it with Chromium Oxide.

I had a large 5Gal Bucket of cold water to keep the blade cool after every pass on the grinder.

That is freakin awesome! I have a DF on the way but only one or I would defintly try your Dogfighter mod. I would love to see how it handles in person.
The Scrapyard knives are perfect mod material because of the low prices.

unsub,

You are exactly correct about the Scrapyard Knives being perfect for mods. They make great stuff at a great price. With that in mind you do not have to worry about being out a few hundred bucks if you screw up the project. The best part is that their SR-77 is tough as hell for the price. I used my SR-77 crash axe to open large crates that hold granite slabs. In the process I had to hack through lots of metal bands and would repeatedly make contact with large nails. These were full power swings and not no whimpy little wacks :D The edge was of course no longer shaving sharp after the fact. However, most portions of the cutting edge was still servicable. All I got was a rolled edge about 1" long in the area that made the most contact with the nails.

morimotom,

I am pretty sure that the crash axe is SR-77 even though it is from the swamp rat line up.

interesting. i got mine from the exchange and hadnt even considered it may be anything other than sr101. not that it matters.

thx for the info.

yep you are right. SR-77 or SR-101. It doesn't really matter. Both are tough enough.
