Name this Wood

What is it? I'm guessing it's pine, but I can't really be sure. I cut a couple sections off of a pallet thinking it might be useful, but I'm not sure what to do with it quite yet.

 
I'm no expert on wood but I bought some very similar if not identical pieces from a wood dealer on Ebay about two years ago who said it was sugar maple. Get some other opinions from the guys on the forum though. Larry
 
I would guess that it's beech. I don't know much about wood though so it's probably a horrible guess.
 
It's quarter sawn sycamore, but if we are naming it let me be first in with Johnny Boy
 
It seems fairly soft. When cutting the end-grain it seems fairly fiberous, almost "crumbly" maybe. Smells sort of like pine, but not exactly. The pallet had boxes of rubber hose on it and that stuff stinks enough that it might be throwing my nose off.
