Naming Knives?

Matched set of three: Lusty Brave Warrior, Angry Woman Vengeance, and Blood River Survivor...

I confess, I'm designing a knife based on what my ancestors would have liked in their homesteading adventures, and named after the river where they settled. This is a personal thing to me, no more, no less.

Just call it what is.

I name some ot them if they are getting pictures taken. I watch allot of westerns and like some of the charactors. Marshall Bowie, Paladin Bowie, Vigilante Bowie, Tombstone Dagger, Justice Bowie and then there is Tortuga from Pirates of the Carribean. Almost all hunter knives are calle Pro Hunter or Blue Mountain Hunters.

I agree only if the name is meant to make the knife appear better than it really is.
Raymond Richard names his knives and I can't believe that anyone wouldn't take his knives seriously.

You are 180 degrees wrong. The only name I like to give them is "sold". Marvin names my knives. He's the fellow that maintains my website. I put him in charge of the name department and he loves doing it. I just like making them. What he chooses to call them is fine with me. When I took up my other past time of raising a few head of cattle I let the family name them and then it started to become less important. The only ones I name are the bulls. I find presidential names work well for the bulls.

If it's something that you'll make more than one of, it should have a name or model. People like to be able to call it something. If it's a one-off design then I think it is more up to the maker and style.

Ok Raymond, I am sorry. I was wrong about the fact that YOU don't name your knives. But the end result is the same. I don't think less of your knives when I see them named.

thats my favorite radio show next to rush.
it was better when Art Bell was host.

Based on the wierd-a$$ radio show I'm listening to, I'm gonna name my next fighter the "Coast to Coast Alien Slayer". I'll probably get sued, though

I often find knife names annoying, especially the tactical and fantasy types. But if that's the market you want to serve, it's probably a selling point. As for outdoor-oriented knives, names based on bodies of water make sense, but there's already so many out there that they kind of blend together. I tend to just call them Field Knife 5 (5-inch blade), Hunter 4, etc. Just describe it based on how it's meant to be used.

Maybe I'm the one being pretentious for judging such things! :D

I guess if you're going to name a knife, you better make sure it's original. Most of the names that make sense have already been used. (Campanion, for instance... kinda wish I'd thought of that)

Marble's named theirs. Randall names theirs. Is this just one of a kinds that you think shouldn't be named? Or any knife?
I personally feel that a knife with or without a name is still a knife. I take it seriously based on it's appearance and usefulness.

Iz, not sure if you are asking me or the original poster. I agree with you. What I meant is that I find that a name only rubs me the wrong way on a crappy knife.

Gotcha. And I agree with you on that.

I have only named 2 knives. My Desert Shark fighters and Hogzilla. A knife has to be really special to deserve a name. Now that I am making alot of 1 of's. It is something to consider.
