Nata WIP

That is a hefty piece of steel... the Terminata... "Come with me if you want to cleave."

Very, very nice job so far! This is going to turn out stunning.

Hey whatever happened with this Nata, Peter?! I just checked your recently posted threads to see if you posted the finished blade elsewhere but I didn't see it. :(

"We want more!" lol, Rick :D

I'm just building the suspense....

"Never drink a [fine]wine before its time", and all that. :p

I'm actually working on the sheath/saya right now. I've continued taking photos so I'll post the apparent long awaited conclusion soon.

It's done. Finally!

The final "look" of this piece went through several iterations. Initially I had the handle done up with a moose hide ito wrap over some green-dyed seal rawhide. That sat for quite a while with ongoing scrutiny and growing disapproval, until I finally ripped that off and went with what I had originally "seen" and drawn out. I am still pondering whether to add a peened copper mekugi to the handle.... it doesn't need it structurally, but aesthetically, maybe.

As well, this is the second sheath built for this piece, both leather, although I had considered building a saya from the same spalted wood. The first leather version was pouch-style with the same inlay piece, but I had issues with that one(I'll leave it at that). I like the way this one turned out.

Visually, there is a proportionality thing going on that doesn't look quite right. But, after I hold it and work with it, I can now understand the these angles and dimensions. It is nimble, powerful(very), accurate, and ergonomically comfortable. This piece was done exactly to the requested profile and dimensions.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

Peter

After long last.....

Ken's Nata( made for a man named Ken):

Blade: 8" x 1 1/2" x +3/16" of hand forged W2(Aldo) with polished forge finish, flat ground bevels are hand sanded to 1200 grit then etched and polished to show off the hamon.
Handle/fittings: 230mm of spalted Red Maple with epoxied jute-wrapping and a moose hide lanyard and ebony bead. The wrought iron tsuba and spacer have been heat textured, etched and polished, accompanied by a copper hibaki and seppa(forward only).
Sheath: Fully leather lined 6/7 oz veg tanned leather, with a spalted Red Maple inlay(with epoxied jute wrap). The moose hide sageo passes through an inlaid, vertically oriented kurikata. The sageo can be used as traditionally designed, or can be looped around the handle/tsuba to more securely hold the blade in the sheath. Belt loop slits on the sheath back offer an alternative carry option.

Very cool looking knife! That spalted maple looks almost like aged bone or antler! Love it!

It's nice to see more blades coming out of your shop Peter.

Why is the handle so long on a blade of this kind? I know the customer asked for these specs, so I am curious. Thanks
