I caught part of this show last night. It was about a 300 mile race across the Australian Outback. There were three contestants. The first was a 35 year old guy from California who was a pro runner/adventure racer. He was sporting all the latest high tech gear. The second was a 60 year old German survival expert. I think all he brought was a large knife (i couldn't tell what brand), and a small pack. The third was a 75 year old Aborigine, he had a large camoflauge backpack. They all chose slightly different paths to reach the destination. The aborigine guy was awesome, he just kept walking at a slow pace and barely stopped at all. The 35 year old was powerwalking. The german guy kept a steady pace. Eventually the german and the 35 year old both had severe blisters. The 35 year old was the first done but he waited for the rest of the guys so they could finish together. It was a cool show.

The German's name is Rüdiger Nehberg. For a summery of the race see:

Nowadays Nehberg is a human rights activist and acts for the Yanomami people and against Female Genital Mutilation. He has crossed the Atlantik ocean several times alone on self made sailing boats (to protest against the killing of the indians of Brasil), hiked the desert Danakil (one of the hottest regions on earth) and rode a self made boat on the blue Nile (where some bandits killed a friend of him and chased him through days, delivering one shoot-out after another)- so basically he is the father of survivalism here in Europe. His books are full of very good tips, altough less hardware oriented than many modern survivalists like.

That was a great story! Talk about adventure! I'd be dead after 3 days! Na! I might make a week!

Imissed about the first ten minutes of the show. In the segment where Boyd Mattson was featured, were those filmed at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School?

That was a good show. I like the fact that it showed that different approaches to the same problem can often be valid. I do remember thinking that the American and German could learn a thing or 12 from the Australian Aborigine.

Who would you rather be stuck in the outback with, in a real survival situation? (Of the three men in the race that is. I'm not talking about Estella Warren here.

sounds like a great show. As in so many journeys it is not the destination that is important but the journey itself. The idea of a winner is irrelevant , who cares if some one was first or last , it is the experience itself that matters.

Might as well slow down cause there is no use rushing to the end of the line... we are all gonna get there anyway

Shoot, I missed that show! Based on what I heard (and in general), I would stick with the aboriginal person. Problem, however, might be the different tolerance to the environmental factors (immunity, heat tolerance, endurance). What works for him might be still hazardous to me.
