NATIVE 4 CF final report

I recently started a thread detailing my pursuit of an issue I had with my Native C41.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=625308&page=2

Once things got a little heated I made the decision to say NOTHING until I had let Spyderco look at my knife and the matter reached a resolution. I followed Sals’ suggestion that I send it in with a note to his attention. My note requested that I would like a Native C41 without the manufacturing blemishes that were detailed in that previous thread.

The end result is that Spyderco has no Native C41s without those marks. In fact, Charlynn tells me they’ve returned shipments (I assume to Seki City) because of those marks. Charlynn gave me the option of getting my knife back or exchanging it for another knife- which I think is fair and reasonable. After poking around and considering the Caly as an alternative I decided that the C41 is really the only Spyderco I want and asked her to send back my knife. It should be in my hands soon.

Sal, I tried to keep this matter between us by sending you an e-mail. You decided to go the route of keeping it public on this forum by petulantly suggesting that if it was perfection I was looking for I’d be better off looking elsewhere. That I was being unreasonable to expect a knife at this price to be perfect. Sal, I’d suggest to you that what I expect is nothing less than you yourself promise your customers.

Websters’ Dictionary - perfect- being entirely without fault or defect

Spyderco Warranty- Spyderco warrants that all of our products are free from defects in material and workmanship.

If you ever achieve perfection in any one thing let us know. I don't think it is a possibility...just something we strive for (or at least I strive towards)

Since he sold you a knife that will perform properly for a reasonable lifetime, your expectations, like your overinterpretation of Webster's, are what is faulty.

Sal's suggestion was not "petulant". It was a straightforward, realistic explanation of what his warrantee was meant to convey.

All this over a tiny cosmetic blemish on a production knife? I guess it takes all kind of people to make a world.

Hi Amnesiac.

Your thread prompted a check on the product coming in. It was deiscovered that all of the knives had the blemish to some degree. We sent them back to Selki for removal of the blemish.

If you'd like to hold off until they are returned with the blemish repaired, or until the next shipment comes in, we'll send you one of those.

Can not think of a knife that a flaw of some kind could not be found somewhere on it. Any knife you have has flaws. If you do not think so look harder. After all you want it perfect. Grind is one nanometer higher on one side of the blade then the other. That would be a flaw but would be insane to complain about it. Yes the pictures you show do indeed show a flaw and one frankly that should be fixed, which of course Sal and Spyderco seem to be trying to do.

I have two of the CF Native IV's. Both of them have a small "machining" mark on the liner. I carry one and put the other one away. No big deal as they work perfectly and unless you are being "picky", nobody that has checked my Native IV's out even noticed it.
