Native 5 Opinions

I think you will like the Native 5 ... I usually carry and prefer a bit larger knife ... but the Native 5 feels great ... my hands are slightly above average not huge but it is comfortable for me.

I much prefer the G10 over the plastic scales ... and steel choices you have the option so you could chose the steel you prefer ... it's personally my favorite Spyderco knife.

I figured I would try the FRN and see how I like it. I was looking for something on the lighter side since I am going to be pairing it up with another knife.

then you will probably like the FRN you can definately tell the difference weight wise on this knife.

If I like the model enough it is a good reason to buy another one. You know one with G10 and different steel.

I am going to have to watch it though, my son could end up "acquiring" the orange FRN one.

The native is in my top 3 of all time. Bought my first one about 15 years ago (it was an all stainless model) and now I carry the updated N5 LW almost every day. IMO it’s top of the heap in the 3” group, which is my ideal size for carry. You really have to use the choil otherwise it just doesn’t feel right, when nested in that choil it’s ergos are untouchable.

I prefer the FRN version. Doesn’t look like much on paper, but it is lighter. IWB of board shorts swimming, jumping, lighter is better.

The native has been described as the greatest production execution of a backlock offered by spyderco. It's just been updated and perfected so much over time that it's become a truly superb knife.

Agreed on all counts. I have a N5 LW, it's the folder that caused me to sell all my other folders (I've bought more since, but there was a time where all I owned was the Native), the ergonomics fit my hand perfectly, and the backlock is the best version I've ever experienced on any knife, so smooth and solid. The FRN makes it disappear in the pocket, and the amount of blade that's recessed in the handle makes it feel tiny in the pocket. The Spydiehole is size superbly, makes it too easy to open and impossible to miss when deploying.

If you like to play and flick the knife open this knife is not for you. their are other choices in that genre that are more fun to play with such as the Domino, Dice and the Sage series especially the 5.

I disagree, I fiddle with my Native all the time, it may not be a flicker but it's so smooth and easy to open I can't stop opening and closing it for fun; the lockup click is so satisfying, and the backlock works so well it's even fun to unlock it.

Best choice, it's incredibly light, small, and agile, outperforms other much larger knives.

Just got my Native 5 out of the mail. The size is perfect, and it is light! It feels comfortable in the hand. I haven't done any hard cutting with it, but I can see it being very. Comfortable to use and carry. Just my simple first impressions.

You still liking your Native? Any downsides in your opinion?

I really love my Blurple G10/S110V model. It is in my top 3 spydies. The Native is the model I really plan on having the biggest variety of. There are probably 5 current and disco'd models I will be picking up at some point. And there are a ton of potential models that havent been announced that I am praying for! Jade/M4, Red/M390, 52100/PPCF, Gray/Cruwear, etc.

I don't have a lightweight yet, but will probably pick up the Salt, Maxamet, and CS Orange DLC S90V at some point. Looking forward to the Salt the most in the lightweight category.

I have the KC exclusive smooth green G10 liner delete model, and I dont like smooth G10, and I prefer the heft and solid feel of the liners in the G10. So not a huge fan of that and sad to hear about them moving other models to linerless.

I am still really liking my Native a lot. My son actually got the orange handled S90V and I ordered another Native 5 with Maxamet steel. Awesome knives. I am really impressed with both of them.

I don't regret selling many of the knives I've let go. The Native 5LW is one I kinda do. I'm planning on getting at least the compression lil-native, and probably the slippy, and the new lc200n is really looking tempting as well.

I have two questions:

1) Is there a person/company that makes a deed pocket carry clip for the Native 5?

2) Has anyone had any issues with the structural integrity of one of the liner-less LW models (note that I am not asking about toughness of the steel)? Are the grips prone to bending/breaking under lateral stress? Naturally I only plan to use my LW model for slicing, not prying, but want to know how well it will hold up in a situation where I do not have time to fetch a more robust tool for the job. I suppose the basic question is how much of a trade-off exists: (i) is the LW model weaker, overall, for lack of a liner, and/or (ii) is the strength added by a liner negligible in the first place?

^ Good questions. I have a couple of Native 5's without liners but haven't had them long enough to answer your questions -- they seem structurally strong and stable. Also agree on the clip -- would be nice if it sat deeper in the pocket.

Just picked up a fluted titanium. Great except that the tip isn't quite centered. I'm wondering if this will change over time, since pressure from my right thumb moves it into a centered position ;-)

I have had a native with a liner and the LW versions as well. Of course, the one with liners and G-10 handles will be stronger, if you intend to stab things and try to pry, than the light weight plastic models. Personally, I found the liner versions to be kind of heavy, for such a small frame knife. The light weight version, I carry in gym shorts, around the house and on jogs around the neighborhood. It carries much better for those purposes than the liner version, to me. In heavier clothes, say real pants with a belt, I carry a military or PM2. I don't find the light weight version to be weak for normal cutting tasks. I mostly use it around the house and opening packages. I have noticed no bending and it has not broken. So, is it not quite as strong as the liner versions? Yes, at a cost of weight. Is it too weak for every day carry and use? No.

Hope that helps.

Although it is a perfect fit and carries well, not a huge fan of how it feels in hand with firm grip. Needless to say, I don't use it. Search amazon 'deep carry clip native'.
