Native 5 Test Report

I'm glad S35VN came out with no serious issues in this. As far as the Sebenza that was tested it must have been a fluke or a HT issue.

CTS had the same issue in both the Native 5 and Sebenza.

Thanks again for the test Jim.

That's right! Well I guess the two variables are down to CTS's testing(no offense) and a possible HT w/that particular knife. I have been using a small Sebbie in this steel and actually like it better than S30V(easier maintenance) with a Large in the mail. So unless something major pops up I am going to use and enjoy S35VN without pause.

We really can't relate my test and John's directly and definitely not on the CRK knife here.

There is a big difference as far as we know between the HRC hardness of the N5 and the CRK.

We know the N5 is 59.5 RC and that CRK should be in the 58-59 RC range, but we don't know exactly what they are, but there could be as much as 1.5 point difference in hardness.

In the end we really don't know what the story is.

I'd be surprised if a hardness difference that small in that range had significant impact on the propensity of the alloy to roll. I wouldn't expect an alloy to roll at a hardness of 58. That is still very strong. If it were down at 54-55, it might be different.

I don't know enough about S35VN to be sure, but I would tend to think a good drop like that could case issues, I know performance would tank with that drop for sure though based on what I saw with S30V at different RC ranges.

So the bottom line is Cold Steel makes a better chisel than a Sebenza. ;)

The Native 5 performed extremely well and S35VN seems to be a very good steel based on my testing, Spyderco did an excellent job with it. With all the questions about S35VN lately all I can say is it performed well in my testing of the Native 5 and it and the NAtive 5 is highly recommended by me.

Great test! Thats all I need to know.......... THANKS!

That's reassuring and thanks Jim! I just picked up a very expensive folder in S35VN - it's at 61-62 HRC. It's fine but w/o heavy testing it's been on my mind. Should be god to go.

Ken44 you've mentioned CTS' results 2x's so I'd like to pose the question that's in my mind to you. What do you think caused CTS's results? I really have no idea since his tests look very subdued compared to Ankerson's who does a thicker rope, lots of cardboard and a lot of wood slicing.

It's hard to believe the CTS got 2 defective folders - so there's something in what he's doing to produce those results IMO? Maybe blade slap against the cutting board - not sure?

cziv, I have no idea really???
But I was very supprised that many people put so much stock into ONE single You Tube vid, esp givin CTS had the same results with two different knives. Their was a couple of people that were acually about to send there Native 5 back to have it tested, but have now changed there mind after seeing Jim's test, and Sals post stating he had CATRA tested the steel in some Native 5's, and it was fine.

I'm sure your knife will be fine, and the steel will prove to be a good one over time.
If you don't mind me asking, what knife did you get?
