Native 5? Thoughts?

The native 5 is awesome in hand. Feels real comfortable,
with no hot spots, when cutting through thick, double-ply,
corrugated cardboard- ones used to transport fruit.
Fit and finish is spot on. Part of my edc rotation.

Picked up a Native 5 in January along with a Delica.

Before I always carried a Leatherman Skeletool since that's the type of knife you find over here, the other folders are usually, SAKs, no name Chinese made cheap imports or Opinels. After a bit of research online (lurking here and AR15.com) as to what steel, design and materials I wanted I went to Heinnie Hayes online shop to see what they had in stock. Due to local laws restricting blade size to 8cm from the handle (including choil) most of what I wanted (Manix, Para 2) was out of the question. But the Native stood out with it's impressive steel and G 10 grips and a very good reputation.

Since I had never handled Spyderco before I ordered a Delica as well since it seemed to be a favorite, both arrived and to say I was impressed was an understatement fit and finish on the Native was excellent and the steel was shaving paper sharp. I intended to carry the Native EDC but it's a little too nice so I save it for 'Gentleman' carry, if I have to wear a suit that's my go to knife. Since then I picked up several knives but none match the Native in quality. I may pick up another to EDC and save one for more formal occasions. (unless a PM3 is coming out with a blade length of 8 cm). Only gripe is that the clip is polished and I would prefer a black clip.

I'm currently being forced to carry a Titan Native testing the production piece. :o I'm impressed with what the Golden knifemakers have accomplished.

Did I read somewhere that there would be a Native Chief sometime? If so when roughly?

Hi RF11,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I'd like to thank everyone for their kind comments. It's appreicateed.

I would absolutely LOVE to see a native5 sprint run with some super steel of some kind. M390, CPM M4, CTS-204P, XHP, they'd all be good by me. S35vn and S30V just don't really do it for me anymore.

Sal - we know, it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. I imagine most of us would be happy to help you out should it get to be too much ;)

I'm really looking forward to this one!!

It is a great knife all around. Rock solid handles and lockup, comfortable knife even in big hands. I have a PM2 that I love and carry on the jobsite, but I prefer a smaller knife for EDC outside of work, I searched for quite a while before I stumbled across the Native5, and it has been perfect for me. The S35VN is substantially easier to sharpen than the S30V of my PM2, but still holds an edge reasonably well. Overall I would highly recommend it, even if it isn't your favorite knife, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks guys. I'm definitely sold. It's good to finally hear some Native fans speak because as a long time Spyderco user this is one model that never called to me but now that's going to change. I just need to sell a few more knives... to make room for this one.

The Native 5 has been my EDC work knife for about four months, replacing a FRN Native. I find myself grabbing the 5 for carry on other occasions as well. The FRN is officially retired.
