Pretty much decided that I need a Native 5, but I can't decide to get the G10 or the light weight. Price difference is $50 give or take so there is always that, but I'm asking the experts, is the G10 worth it or is light weight the way to go? I have several folders with G10 and I like it a lot, but for $50 wondering if its worth it here?

I've had both. If you don't mind the feel of a linerless knife, go with the FRN. The G10 version is noticeably beefier, and more solid-feeling. I thought it was overkill, so preferred to stay with the LW version. Much more pocket-friendly. If you're looking for a heavy-duty folder, I'd steer away from the Native anyway, and head for the GB. About the same price from what I've seen.

Lightweight all the way. G10 is great and all, but you're really paying an extra $50 or so for in-hand feel, not any functionality. And the lightweight is, well, lightweight.

Agreed. If it's an EDC, I think you would appreciate the lightweight feeling of the FRN.

The G10 scale edges are not comfortable like the FRN. Spyderco makes an excellent sturdy knife so either is a win.

I use the LTW version as my EDC. It's the perfect size. And the FRN makes it easy to grip even if your hands are wet.

I usually like the balance of knives with full liners and G10 or carbon fiber. But for functionality, it's hard to find fault with FRN.

I only have the G10 version of the N5 and it's a bit heavy for its size but I don't notice the extra weight. Awesome knife. It does feel more solid than the previous gen FRN Native.

I prefer the G-10 due to fit and finish, sentimental reasons, and I overall prefer G-10 over FRN. It's definitely beefier and more solid feeling. The LW, however, just disappears in the pocket and is every bit as capable a cutter.
If weight is a factor, obviously go with the LW. If you like a little substance, and/or want custom scales, go G-10.

I have the G10 and my brother has the FRN. The FRN actually feels quite solid on a knife this size. However, I choose the G10, not because of materials, but because the FRN is riveted. You can't take it apart. I like to disassemble my knives for cleaning on occasion.

I have the g10 and the lightweight, the LW super easy carry and the s90v version is an awesome incentive if thats your thing-the only negative I have about the LW is the feel ,I does feel plasticky(if thats a word)but I know the handles really are super durable.

the g10 version I really like it ,got some weight to it, but really makes it feel robust it is a tank-feels like a smaller version of the mini manix(old school)the s110v version is really nice, occasionally you can find a a really good price on it.

My favorite is actually the carbon fiber with vg-10 from Japan ,kind of hard to find nowadays-it's kind of a blend of both the above mentioned ,very light, strong, good steel and beautiful.

go with the LW at first just to make sure you are going to like the ,feel, config.,lock back, etc...and you won't be out to much money.

If you like heavyweights, get the G10. It's 1.2oz heavier than LW, almost as heavy as the PM2.

I prefer the LW. I like G10 but not $50 more. At that price, I'd prefer to get aftermarket linerless G10 scales.

not true, the native 5 LW is screwed together and you can totally disassemble it,not that you would ever need to,and both versions of the knife are grate,i enjoy using mine, although the G-10 sees more pocket time.

Both are exceptionally well engineered and well built folders. You can definitely take both apart and all Native 5 blades are swappable, meaning you can make a G10 version with a serrated blade in it, or a partially serrated black blade or a S90V or S110V, whatever suits you. It's a great platform for this.

Another thing to consider about your choice is the clip. It's easier to find nicer aftermarket deep carry clips that fit the G10 version versus the lightweight (although they do exist), plus there's the opportunity for aftermarket scales too. Steve Ketchen made a few for me... Cheers :)

Last pic is an example of Casey Lynch's short clips on some N5's. Both Casey and Steve are incredible to work with BTW :)

I recently receive the FRN Native...
Awesome knife !
And only 70 grs ! :eek: :cool::thumbup:
Dragonfly G10 is 57 grs (FRN D'Fly is 34 grs)

By the way I would love a frn D'fly build like the Native 5 :cool:

Nice collection DNAIrradiator :)

IMO, the FRN edges are not comfortable and the G10 feels a little better. I think it's subjective and hard to know unless you can compare them yourself.

Both versions are very good. My latest Native 5 version is the FRN model and I really like it. I'm more apt to use it, in general, than the G10 or CF just because of the light and flat form factor. The other two are thicker and heavier. The entire Native line is excellent. You just need to define which one would work best for you. The FRN, I'd guess, would satisfy EDC needs for 95% of the users out there.
