Native III, Manix or Captain

Since you haven't made up your mind yet.... Give the Delica or Endura some consideration. There is a reason that they have been around for 17+ years. That's not even considering how many variations of the knife are available right now... ;)

(What fun would it be to narrow your selection anyways, right?)

I've had an endura for many years. It was my actually my first spyderco purchase. I use to use it when I was hiking and camping. Lost it during a bushwhack and it made me sick. I actually retraced my steps to try and find it but never did. My son and wife actually bought me a replacement. I still use it but it was never my EDC.

Thanks for the help.

If you are concerned about weight consider the para military its very light still has a comfortable sized handle and has a flat ground blade. I personally prefer the flat ground blades.

I'll take a look at the para military. I don't think it is as tough as the mini manix but it probably would compare well against the native? Notice that is more of a question than a statement.

Thanks.

I figure that there are not many knives as tough as the manix. As far as the native goes. Yes I think g-10 definitely is an upgrade over frn. And the compression lock has alot going for it IMO. My wife carries a native and it is too small for me to get a firm grip on. The native 3 is somewhat more comfortable. But IMO the para is absolutely superior to the native . The flat grind is definitely a performance upgrade.

If you don't want to spring for the Manix then you should definately get the S30V Native. I have one and I'd never leave my home without it.

Thanks for this great write up and taking the time. I still haven't made a decision but am heavily leaning towards the Mini Manix but the weight worries me. If it was the price of the Native I probably wouldn't give it a second thought though. :) I really with I could see and handle one somewhere but I don't know anyone local who has one so it keeps ping ponging in my head. :D

Thanks again.
Everyone has been a big help.

If you're still deciding, I'd say definitely go for a Manix. I've been carrying mine for several weeks now, and it's wonderful. I don't notice the weight at all, and the size and utility of the knife is great. I use it for all sorts of chores, and even find myself looking for tasks to do so I can use it! I'm a little dissapointed that the S30V (or VG10, for that matter) won't hold it's absolute razor edge for long -- swipe through a few boxes, and it's down to barely shaving sharp. It seems to keep that level of sharpness pretty well, but I've gotten spoiled -- nothing but a razor edge for me now!

If you really feel the Manix is too big, I expect the Mini-Manix would be a great knife, too. It's not a lot lighter or shorter, but it might just make the difference. Now that I've been using my Manix for awhile, my Native III seems really small and cramped, so I hardly use it anymore.

Whatever you do, I HIGHLY recommend that you get a flat ground blade. I notice a HUGE difference between using my Manix's flat ground blade, and my Native's hollow ground one. For that matter, the flat ground blade on my Ontario Knives RAT-7 would cut through fruit and cardboard better than my hollow ground Native!

Good luck with your decision -- sometimes there are almost TOO many choices! Go with the Manix, and I can pretty much guarantee you'll be glad you did.

I agree with mountain man on this. The flat grind is definitely the way to go for EDC. I carry either a mini manix or a para mille everyday. I do prefer the para for edc though. It feels quite a bit lighter. Outdoors full size manix all the way. It has actually replaced one fixed blade in my kit. I try never to tell people to narrow their selections but in this case I would suggest narrowing them to flat ground blades.
