Native or Delica 4?

I am totally stuck between these two. Eventually I will buy both.

I like the Delica slightly better than the Native.

I already own an ATS-55 one, which is about 5-6 years old.

The Native is at Walmart which I could buy tomorrow. It would be nice to have a knife with a different feel.

I have never held the new Delica. That was why I posted the question asking; Will Walmart carry the Delica?, because I could simply hold them both and make a decision. Without holding a new delica, makes me a little weary of straight out ordering one.

Any thoughts?

I have the D4 and the Native (several as a matter of fact). I wish I could say which I like better. The linered D4 is a nicer piece of cutlery but the Native is a must have too. I say buy the Native now and pick up the D4 at your leisure.

Walmart will not carry the Delica because it's made in Japan.

I personally would try out the Native. It's a good knife. I love the old ATS-55 Delica's and I don't know if I like the new Delica's as much. I however like the Native. The hole is a bit more difficult to get to as it's so close to the handle when closed. Both are good knives. :D

I think the Native is the only one you will see at Walmart.

I prefer the Delica to the Native, as the Delica is thinner and the thumb hole is completely exposed allowing for easy opening. The Native's hole is very slightly obscured by the scales, making it - for me - a little less easy to open. Though still easy.

I bought a Native at Walmart when I was jonesing for a new knife, and have no complaints. Its a fine knife, and a good price at $40. I just prefer the Delica a little better.

cheers

It would depend what you plan on using it for, but if you already have on Delica and no Native.. I'd get the Native first. It's a fantastic knife for EDC. You can snag a Delica later (ZDP is out now).

Have you handled the Native? I personally don't care for its handle, at all. The D4, on the other hand, feels wonderful. If it was me, I'd get the D4, simply due to handle ergos. Therefore, if you haven't held the Native at Walmart, drive on over and get a feel for it.

Trout, the Native feels pretty good to me. The old Delica feels slightly better though.

I do agree though that when the holes are close to the handle, it makes it less snapable.

My old delica snaps really well.

I will probably go with the Native now and then get the Delica down the road.

Thanks everyone.

I like S30V more than VG-10, so, I prefer the Native. I also find the Native more comfortable and like the choil.

You have chanse to get Delica IV ZDP-189. Internet retailers start selling it. And on my opinion Native was made not for human hand - did you notice "Golden Colorado USA Earth" label on it. It for interplanet export, especially for martians anatomy! I tryed hard but can not manage to hold it with my hand.

Thanks, Vassili.

If you can snag a D4 do it. The Native will always be available. The D4 is a limited run.

I absolutely love S30V so I'm biased ... it's a spectacular steel in a special knife. Get both if you can ... they're both that good, but get the Delica in ZDP-189, you'll be amazed by the steel; it's the only steel I prefer over S30V. Good luck! :D

I have Wal-mart Native and SS Delica 4. Native feels much more comfortable in my hand (I use choil) and S30V is very holds edge well. I sharpen it at 30 degrees. Of cause it would be better to get both knives.

So when are they going to make the ZDP-189 waved version?

I highly doubt that would happen but it would be pretty cool and I'm pretty sure just about everyone on this forum would buy one...

Yup, that is the older handle config on the walmart ad. The ZDP Delica is in the $70-80 range online and retail is $ 110 if I remember correctly.

Neither. Get a Delica 3. The 'improved' 4 is a bit heavier, has a less penetrating point, and constantly attracts lint in the lockup (for me) which the 3 never does.

Delica 4

+Better FRN texturing for superior slip resistance
+Fully exposed opening hole that is slighter larger than the natives
+Steel liners give it a more solid feel
+Better texturing for the thumb on the spine of the blade than the native
+Thinner than Native
+Screw construction rather than pins on the Native

Native

+s30v steel
+Handle design and blade weight make one-handed closing easier and safer
+Incredibly good ergonomics, better than Delica's IMO (Once I got used to it, it's one of the most natural feelings knives I've ever handled)
+Point has more penetration ability
+Shorter handle than the Delica while keeping enough material to grip on
+Finger choil
+Cheaper price tag

I think overall the Delica has more minute innovations packed into a clever, well-designed package that has been improved upon over the years and makes a very practical knife. However, the ergos and blade steel on The Native are great and despite all the great characteristics of the Delica, I find myself really enjoying the Native's design. I reach for it more than my Delica, though both have served me without fail.
