Native or Mini-Grip for 8 year old?

Congrats to your sone on the Native. Great choice.

I think people being hesitant about giving an 8 yaer old a knife is just a sign of the times. I know I had several knives by age 8. Its a lot easier to get into trouble with a knife now than it was then though. Show up to shool with a knife 20 years ago and the school called your parents and you don't get to go out for recess... maybe. Show up with one now, and they call the police and you get expelled.

Thanks ginshun. Sadly, I think you're dead on with your assessment of the times. :(

It is amazing how things have changed for the worse. When I was a kid I would not think of going to school without my knife. At lunch time we had a game where we stood around and threw knives at a circle on the ground. Makes me cringe now to think of sticking one of my knives to the hilt in the ground but it was a very popular game with the boys. And if the principal saw us he would likely stop to watch.

I would allow him to choose the knife. whatever fits his hand better is the winner. there should definitely be some sort of caution while handling the axis lock; but, how much is definitely the role of the parent. perhaps he should only have it for an hour every night until he is proficient enough for daily carry. just a thought.

boog, KC, & aj,

Thanks for your replies. I'm convinced the Native was the right choice - if for no other reason than the front lock. I showed him the safest way to disengage it and he now automatically closes it the same way each time. It already seems natural to him.
