Native or Native III?

Hello guys,

I hope this is okay to post here! But I had quite a simple question, but what is the difference between a Native and a Native III?

I know if you go on the web site you can see the different 'specs', but I was wondering with knives if a later model usually means 'better'. (e.g. Playstation 3 and Playstation 1!) Sorry for my ignorance! :)

Also, for those who have both which one do you guys like better?

I really like the Native with the black coloured blade, but the Native III doesn't come like that so I want to make sure if I get the black that I won't have missed out on a better buy. Also because I read from someone that the Native IV might be coming out in a months time, makes me wonder if I should wait.

Thanks guys!

Differences:
They have some what different blade shapes. I like the III shape better, but that's a judgment call.

They are different alloys.
The Naitive is S30V. The III is VG10.
S30V will hold an edge longer. VG10 probably gets sharper, and it still lasts a long time.

The handles are different.
The Native is flatter. Some say it fits the pocket better.
The III is fuller. Some say it fills the hand better.

The clip is different.
The Native has a metal clip. The III has a wire clip. I like the wire clip because it seems to catch on things less.

I think it is a judgement call on your part of what works best for you.

Can't go wrong with either.

The Native II is the stainless steel handled model.

There are the PE, Plain Edge blade, SE, Fully Serrated blade and the CE, Combination edge which has some serrations at the base of the blade and plain edge towards the front of the blade.

There have been various steels used in the Natives at well.
440C, 440V, GIN-1, VG-10, S30V. Also through the years there have been slight differences in the blade grinds, i.e., small changes in the swedges.

The Native is considered by a lot of people to be the best bang for the buck when it comes to folding knives in regards to materials, design and function and price.

And to top it off, the Native IV will be a refinement of the Native I design -- with Carbon Fiber handles and a flat ground blade. Unfortunately, that also puts this iteration of the Native out of the price range of the other two currently available models.

Oh okay! Thanks heaps for the information guys. I guess I won't be waiting for a Native IV anytime soon if it's going to be more expensive! :)

I do have a question though, which is probably simple but I just can't find the answer. What grind is the Native I?

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a Hollow Saber? I know what a hollow grind is, and I know what a Sabre grind is. Is a Hollow Sabre somehow a mix of the two?

Anybody have further information on the Hollow Sabre? :/

Also, looking at the Spyderco web site the Native I FRN Black Blade only appears to come in Combination Edge. On my local dealer's web site it says they have it on Plain Edge. I have asked them about that, but I'm just curious if there ever was a Plain Edge Black Bladed Native, because that's what I would go for! :)

[Edit:] And for those who have both the Native I and III, which one do YOU prefer, and why?

Read post #2, it's personal preference, i ordered a native lightweight in s30v yesterday, it's going to arrive this week(hopefully!).

Hey Roger999. I know it's personal preference! But I'm just wondering why people are 'personally preferring' one over the other! :) Just curious.

Hi,

you may want to download the Spyderco catalog here and take a look at page 83 under "hollow grind". That's the grind of the Native I (plus the spine swedge :)). They just don't call it hollow saber grind since there doesn't seem to exist a Spydie with the contrasting "FULL hollow grind", so every hollow grind on a Spydie is saber grind at the same time.

In the post 12 of this excellent thread:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=539623 Mr Blonde gives good reasons to hope: "If the market likes this one, then an FRN version will be made in Golden of the same pattern". Let it be.

dantzk.

The Native III is my personal favorite. I have larger hands and the fuller "3D" handle fits my hand better. I also like the wire pocketclip as when the knife is in my pocket it is hard to see the clip thus that I have a knife in my pocket. Now, I negated that feature by adding my own lanyard but that's my preference.

I decided to get Native I because of the flatter handle, though I liked wire clip of Native III better. However the shape of the swedge helped me to make the final choice. This knife is soo
