Native surprise.

I went to Wal Mart to buy a Native for my sons birthday. I asked a clerk to see 3 of them so I could pick the tightest one. To my surprise they were all perfect! My two older Natives and the others I examined when I bought them had some small vertical play. I think the Spydie folks have amped up the QC on this model.
I hope my new Caly 3 when I finally get it is as tight.

Mine has no blade play, but I hand picked it from the 8 they had in stock. Come to think of it though, only a couple had real slight vertical blade play, not nearly enough to stop me from buying it if they were the only ones they had.

Hey gunmike1, are you referring to the movement of the blade under heavy cutting pressure? I love my Native III, but was annoyed the first time I really put pressure on it while cutting. There is quite a bit of movement upward on the blade under heavy pressure, though none from side-to-side or pushing down on the blade (trying to close it while still locked.)

Is this a common problem with Natives? I hope this doesn't show up in the Manix I'm planning to order over the Internet.

I've never run into a loose Native, though the first few I handled were far too tight and opening was quite difficult.

I unfortunately had the exact opposite experience. I asked to see all the Natives at my Wal-Mart, and each (I believe there were either two or three) had quite a bit of horizontal play and sub-par fit and finish. Needless to say, I was disappointed, but perhaps I'll try again at a different Wal-Mart in the future.

My old native 1, had and still have a lock strength problem. When I cut into something really hard, the blade tends to unlock. But I love that thing, with a broken tip, bended swedge and all.
