Native vs. Delica

I am wanting to purchase a Delica and am trying to find out which version would be best for my use. I am a big fan of the natives blade profile, size, robustness, and tip, as well as its rough frn handle.

I would like to purchase the model (either old or new) of the delica that most closely approximates the characteristics of the native. If I understand correctly the latest models don't have the sharp tips on the blades? Is the tip on the native considered a "sharp" tip? (I don't know the proper technical terms here)

Thanks
Wayne

Thickness is what you're describing with the tips. The Delica 4, the current model, has a thicker tip than the previous models. The flat ground Delica 4 in G10 probably has a slightly thinner tip, but I'm not certain.

If the thin tip is important to you I would suggest the Delica 3 or consider one of the Calypso models.

If you want a knife that's similar to your Native in shape and size, also consider the recently released Spyderco Sage. http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31776

Check out the Delica with the Emerson Wave. The blade profile is different than the standard Delica and the spine of the blade is thicker at the point.

The Native simply doesn't fit my hand, so no competition.

If you need a thin tip, then the Delica with the G-10 handle and flat ground VG-10 blade is for you. If you want a strong tip, I recommend the Delica with the ZDP-189 blade. Best edge-holding steel I've ever used.

I can't say anything but good things about my Delica. Good steel, lightweight, very strong, comfortable carry, fits my hand well...

I love my Native, it is one of my EDCs for more than two years. I used to have few Delicas, now down to one and put it for trade. Not my cup of tea.
The knife closest to Native is Native3, or you can wait a month or two and Native4 will come out.

I have a truckload of Natives and a truckload of Delicas :D I love them both as they both serve me well. The native has more of a spearpoint and if stabbing things is your go then the Native would suit you better.... I mean if you like a pointier tip to start your cuts.

The Native has a choil which aids in choking up on the blade for finer more delicate cutting tasks whereas the Delica hasn't got one.

Both knives are considered workhorses in the Spyderco lineup and you will not have any issues with either of them. I would strongly suggest that if you only have the budget for 1 knife that you try to find a store that has both which you can compare side by side.

That said, my Natives have taken a back seat lately to my Delicas and Persians and Caly III :D

For cutting my Native 3 outperformed my D4W from factory. Might be that the Delica came with a slightly less edge from factory. I like both designs. After sending them to Jurgen Schanz they outperform any knive from factory...
:p
