Catnip Repels Mosquitoes More Effectively Than DEET

CHICAGO, August 27, 2001 — Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.

The finding was reported today at the 222nd national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, by the same Iowa State University research group that two years ago discovered that catnip also repels cockroaches.

Entomologist Chris Peterson, Ph.D., with Joel Coats, Ph.D., chair of the university's entomology department, led the effort to test catnip's ability to repel mosquitoes. Peterson, a former post-doctoral research associate at the school, is now with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Wood Products Insects Research Unit, in Starkville, Miss.
Peterson says nepetalactone is about 10 times more effective than DEET because it takes about one-tenth as much nepetalactone as DEET to have the same effect. Most commercial insect repellents contain about 5 percent to 25 percent DEET. Presumably, much less catnip oil would be needed in a formulation to have the same level of repellency as a DEET-based repellent.

Catnip is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family and grows wild in most parts of the United States, although it also is cultivated for commercial use. Catnip is native to Europe and was introduced to this country in the late 18th century. It is primarily known for the stimulating effect it has on cats, although some people use the leaves in tea, as a meat tenderizer and even as a folk treatment for fevers, colds, cramps and migraines.

Here is Nessmuk's Fly Medicine recipe:

Infallible “Fly Medicine” recipe published in Forest and Stream in the summer of 1880 and again in ’83. Three ounces pine tar, two ounces castor oil, one-ounce pennyroyal oil. Simmer all together over a slow fire, and bottle for use. You will hardly need more than two-ounce vial full in a season. Rub it in thoroughly and liberally at first, and after you have established a good glaze, a little replenishing from day to day will be sufficient.

I have an uncle that swears that 1 table or teaspoon which ever one is bigger the night before keeps insects away.

I saw on TV that you can crush up red fire ants then rub them on your skin to repel mosquitoes.

"Achiote", a seed from my native island was used effectively by the Taino indians as a repellant. It produces a red powder that gets applied to the skin. It does stain a bit, though.

I will get the name in English.... got it. The coloring produced is called Annatto.

Catnip? Might work yes and a good thing too as mosquitoes are horrendous-WHY DO THEY LIKE SOME PEOPLE more than others?

Might find feral cats and Cougars start getting attracted to you though if you overdo the catnip:eek:

Thay are VERY fond of me.

Lemon Eucalyptus oil is used is a repellant approved by the CDC. Available in big box stores under brand "Repel."

My wife's got a batch of "The Vinegar of the Four Thieves" brewing... we'll see how it works :o

Just eat lots of garlic. Im sure something would stay away from you. If not the mosquitos then the rest of the world. But if you eat enough of it something would go away..... I love garlic lol

The best I have used is the lemon eucalyptus oil. It is far and away the best I have tried, but seems to take fairly frequent reapplication. Maybe every 1/2 hr or so. When the skeeters start getting close enough to you to think about landing, put some more on. That is the only stuff they stay a ways away from.

Can't believe the garlic theory guys- I eat garlic all of the time and those buggers choose me first no matter who I am with!!!

I worked with this company several years ago :
http://www.allterrainco.com/insect_repellent.html
....good people with effective products; blends of essential oils recognized by the EPA as effective repellents; clinical studies back-up claims of efficacy ....also tested in Costa Rica.

My real-life experience with the product has been positive....but I found it needs to be applied frequently especially under "high-sweat" conditions. Their sunblocks are superior. Good product...good folks !
