Navigation book

My favorite book is "The Essential Wilderness Navigator: How to Find Your Way in the Great Outdoors, Second Edition" by David Seidman and Paul Cleveland.

I've read lots of them and most are so so. Seidman and Cleveland give the best and easiest to read advice. They spend a decent amount of effort in explaining how to handle magnetic declination, which is important in most areas.

Another book I like a lot is "GPS Land Navigation" by Michael Ferguson. Its out of print, but you can still buy it at Amazon.com . The section on GPS models is dated, but the information and advice is excellent.

My favorite web site on the topic is http://www.compassdude.com . Its a great site. You also need to look at http://www.maptools.com if you plan to use a GPS.

I like this little help sheet from http://www.traditionalmountaineering.org/Seminar_Navigation.pdf

I'd like to take a class from the gentleman who runs the traditionalmountaineering.org site, but I live too far away.

Another good one, The Basic Essentials of Map and Compass by Cliff Jacobson

How about " Finding your way without map or compass " it's by Harold Gatty and seems to fit your criteria quite well !!!:D:thumbup:

I bought one called how to be an expert with a ma&compass which is pretty good, If you're in NY however you should try giving John MCaan a shout over at survival resources WWW.bepreparedtosurvive.com He's located in dutchess county and a wizard with a map and compass. Me and a few of my buddies did a private 8 hour nav course with him and it was a real learning experience... I'll probably do another this spring, to get the skills back after being a lazy cookie eating insomniac all winter...let me know if you'd like to join. cheers.
