What books/manuals would you guys recommend reading when it comes to learning how to be confident with a compass?

I am currently reading The SAS Tracking and Navigation handbook. Its a great read. Very in-depth, and covers alot of important nav stuff.

The Army FM manual for Land Nav is also a good read.

I have "Route Finding – Navigating with Map and Compass", by Gregory Crouch. It's a small pocket guide, less than 100 pages. The author goes over all of the fundamentals.

List of contents:
Map Basics
Topographic Maps
Navigating with Topographic Maps
Navigating with an Altimeter
Navigating with a Compass
Dead-Reckoning Navigation
Finding Yourself
Special Navigation Situations
Following Trails
Latitude, Longitude, UTM and MGRS

Freedom of the hills has a pretty decent navigation section. It's a mountaineering book but has some excellent info in it.

I have a book at home I'll have to check the title but most of what I learned I learned taking Land Surveying class in college.

Check the web for an Orienteering Club nearby. You'll feel like a 'dweeb' the first time you go to a meet, but you'll start to learn some hands on tricks that you'll never forget. Nothing like doing!!

I have a LOT of books on navigation. I bought them all in search of a really good book.

My absolute favorite is "The Essential Wilderness Navigator: How to Find Your Way in the Great Outdoors, Second Edition" by David Seidman and Paul Cleveland.

They do a great job of explaining and illustrating the details of how to use a map & compass. Easy reading. The best I've found so far.

They also have excellent "other topics" such as what to to get yourself found (figure out where you are) after you've realized you're lost (not where you thought you were).

A good on-line site is http://www.compassdude.com/ .

I have read a lot of land nav materials, and I am not a huge fan of anything I have come across yet.

There is no substitute for dirt time! :D
