Have a line on buying a 70# (or maybe 75#) NC farrier's anvil from an Amish fellow who wants to get himself a bigger one. It's used but in good shape. The bending posts on the far side of the anvil are a little worn, but that's because he works his horseshoes cold...and he has to beat the piss out of them, too. The horn looks like he's never used it, and the top is in pretty good shape without any major defects or depressions, etc.
He wants $150, but he asked me to make him a hog-slaughtering knife which will take a bit off the price as part of the deal.
Knowing nothing about anvils, what do y'all think of this arrangement? Is NC a decent brand? I've heard it said that $1/lb. is considered a really good deal on anvils, but there's just nothing in my neck of the woods to be had for that price, and I'm NOT going to play eBay Roulette.
And to sweeten the deal, he said that if the hog knife is up to snuff, he'd help me sell them to the Amish community around here if I wanted to make more of them. Apparently these folks have fallen prey to crap knives bought at WalMart and are hungry for good, long lasting carbon steel cutlery like nobody is making anymore.
