Nearly lost my Luminox, twise.

To me this is a fault; to others it may be a safety measure. The sprung bar that holds the strap to my traser/Luminox S3101P(?) dive watch has failed twise. The first time when I caught it when running. I found the pieces and fixed it. The second time on a dive boat when trying to attach it over my wet suit.

I love the watch, infact I'm buying the smaller S1200.

I'm tough on watches and the Luminox are up to my abuse, but I don't like the fact that the bar can fail even though it might save you from breaking your wrist.

Anyone else had this problem? Is it a problem?

Knock on wood, I've had fairly good luck with spring bars, but certainly nothing beats the old mil-style fixed lug bars where security is a concern. About the best I can recommend on a routine basis is to purchase some good quality, heavy duty aftermarket stainless steel spring bars for your watch. Another good safeguard is to wear your watch on a mil/diver's style nylon one piece watchband. At least with these both spring bars have to break before you'll lose the watch.

A more extreme solution (only for use with metal cased watches) is to have your watch modified to a fixed lug configuration. Some accomplish this by having a watchmaker drill completely through the lug arm on one side and solder a solid bar across, or alternatively, I've heard of some folks epoxying a high quality spring bar into place. Either way obviously provides more security than a simple spring bar arrangement, though it does severely restrict the number of off-the-shelf bands that will be compatible with your watch.

Guys, I've been preaching this for months; the Luminox pins SUCK. Replace the Luminox pins with Rolex pins and you'll have a watch that will never fail you. It still blows me away; Luminox KNOWS that they're pins suck, yet they continue to use them. This is pretty much the only complaint that I ever hear about Luminox watches. Increase the price of the watch by $6-$8 and make it RIGHT!
I LOVE my 3104, but it's got Rolex pins. Why? Because the Luminox pins randomly explode!

I had the same problem with my Wenger gst. Great watch, looks good, took abuse well but twice on vacation it got bumped and just fell off my wrist. Im not talking a hard bump either. A forumite sent me two heavy duty stainless pins and the problem was solved. He also gave me a site to get more should I need them.

Hope this helps. My watch hasnt fallen off since under much more severe conditions.

After reading this, I went to my local jewler today to purchase a couple of 22mm Rolex pins for my Luminox 3105. The Rolex pins were to large to fit the small holes.

He also took a look at the pins that are in my Luminox, and he told me to save my money, that the pins are as strong as anything else that he has, including Seiko divers' watch pins...

The Rolex spring bars are very sturdy indeed, but I thought they were generally only available in a 20mm length. Eric, where did you happen to come across 22mm Rolex bars?

Be advised that when properly fitted, the "shoulderless" Rolex spring bars can only be removed again if the retaining hole is drilled completely through the lug arm (the spring part of the bar must be compressed from the outside in). Rolexes obviously have this feature, but not all watches do.

Dann,
I have a great appreciation for any jeweler (or auto mechanic, for that matter

) who will pass up on an opportunity to make a sale when one isn't necessary, but it's been my experience that not all spring bars are created equal.

In any case, the aforementioned nylon bands can provide that extra level of protection for those who are concerned about spring bar breakage.

Bronco,

Maybe I was mistaken on the length of the Rolex pins.

. I measured my Luminox 3105, and it came out to 22mm, so that's what I asked the jewler for. He drug out his Rolex pin (spring bar?) box, and tried 4 or 5 different ones, but none seemed to fit.

.

I think maybe I'll try a different jewler tomorrow...
