Neat discovery

I tend to keep my gear dry. I suppose if you let it sit wet for several days it would corrode. Even if I went into the drink with all my gear I would begin drying it out immediatley and if I planned on gettting wet most of my gear would be in waterproof containers or bags to begin with.
But why would your keys stay wet for that long?
Seems like tinkering for tinkering's sake.

I've been wondering how to cover my firesteel too, to keep it from rubbing on other things and corrosion and today I found a "heat shrink tubing" kit from a local computer parts & electronics store (common company).

I have the 1/4 inch rod and a sport size firesteel. I cut the tube to length with a little extra (for the sport model), carefully heated up the lower end with my zippo, and Wah-La, nice homemade case,

I'm sure with a heat gun it would work better and look nicer. It is snug at the bottom but comes on and off easy. I bent the bottom of the tube cover as I was heating, hoping to make it more water proof, but I think next them I'll just leave it tubular and uncapped.. I did not have the size in the kit for the 1/4 inch rod, almost did, just the sport model. but I'll keep looking..

Here is another one for the clear nail polish first and then I cut up a bunch of pieces of electricians shrink tubing. Get a size where the i.d. is just a little bigger then the rod you have. Slide the ferro rod into a shrink tube that is longer then the rod and "shrink" both ends and nip off to the size you want for storing. The shrink tubing will slice right off when you need to make a fire.

Have yall seen that rubber stuff that you can buy to dip tool handles in? I bet that would be good and durable yet easy to scrape off. Chris

Ya, exactly. I just took a tube of clear liquid silicone and smeared it all over the fero rod of my Swedish Firesteel. I smeared it all over with a q-tip. It's a little lumpy/bumpy, looking, but it's water sealed and has an added measure of shock/breakage resistance. The rubbery silicone can be peeled off when needed.
