Another reason to attend hammer-ins, Guild meetings, and knifemaker get togethers in general.

While at the Georgia Knifemakers Guild meeting a couple of weeks ago, a friend Carl (CRex) pulled out a handy gadget, and I couldn't wait to get home to make one.

This tool allows you full-tang forgers to forge the finger groove while using the anvil face to keep the spine straight.

You will notice in the pic that I have two size bars (large and small finger groove).

I made mine with a bolt for the base in order to fit in the pritchet hole on the anvil. This lets me rotate it to whatever angle on the anvil face I want.

Hope you can make sense of this.

I don't forge, but that makes sense to me. Kind of like a fullering tool in a way. I love stuff like that, simple and effective

That anvil face is so beautiful that I would almost be afraid to work on it! I have had that minor annoyance many times of using a bottom tool or surface to form that shape at the drop edge, the spine kinks just a bit usually and takes a little creative hammering sometimes to correct. This is an elegant solution!

Nice. Thanks for sharing Robert. I like the idea of using a bolt to allow easy rotation. Guess I have some work to do:)

Hey Big Boy, How in the heck do you keep your work on the anvil face? I keep a little rust on mine so I can control the steel. BTW, nice tool......

Hey Big-un,

I paid so dang much for that chunk of steel that I have to treat it like a new car. I wash and wax it nearly every day.

Whenever I see somebody walking near it, I steer them in another direction. I figure the new will wear off in about 30 years.

Cool tool!
You don't use that anvil do you? You still use your old one huh?;)

Robert, You can tell me. I bet you use that anvil face when you've misplaced your mirror and its time to fix your hair.

Thats neat. Now did you post this for the tool or to show off that anvil face? Not a cats eye to be found.
