Neato.

Every time I see a National I can't help but feel like that beautiful poll was a missed hardening opportunity on Plumb's part. Fingers crossed that Council decides to harden it. They'll listen to feedback, so by all means write them to let them know your preference!
I wrote them (Council) a week ago on this issue (hardening the poll) of their ax and they haven't bothered to reply. So, my guess is they don't care about customer feedback...? DM

I wrote them, too.

"I saw an image which was reported to be a prototype for a new hatchet you're designing. It had the form of a small rafting pattern axe. I hope you make this. And I hope you have the good sense to give it a hardened poll. If you do that it will sell."

If everyone who wants one of these writes to them (feel free to copy and paste what I wrote) then maybe they will grant us our wish.

It's possible that your email got lost in their inbox or caught in the spam filter. They've always responded to me very promptly, even back before I was a retailer of theirs.

If it's for throwing at all I doubt it'll be hard . I hope it's not, or the feedback will make them change their minds re throwing em. Wondering if it's a simple wedge?

I hope it's great, if it's great they'll get a third shot out of me!

Could be a number of things, from the seasonal rush to some guys picking his nose. So, I sent a second one today. Fact is they haven't gotten back to me on
this and the possibility of my first assessment is gaining ground. Could be they just don't want to address it. DM

Ok, I've Now heard from them and they side stepped the non-heat treatment of the poll issue. So, we shall see if they Want to address this malady. I suspect it wouldn't add much cost to the product. DM

I don't think there's any "malady" to be addressed so much as they just haven't decided yet. But I figure if they hear from enough of us it'll nudge them in that direction. :D

Did they harden the poll on their Pack axe or carver?

Yes, though those are both in their Woodcraft series and this model is destined for the Sport Utility, which is what the standard painted Jersey, boy's axe, Hudson Bay, and hatchet all were upgraded to.

They contacted me, too, and specifically asked about the hardened poll issue. I responded as follows:

"Then thing is, if you're gonna put a beveled poll on it then it needs to be hardened and functional. And you need to advertise it as having a hardened poll and being able to stand use as a small sledge (which of course means using thicker eye walls and an appropriate steel).

If it's not going to have any use beyond what every other hatchet does then what's the point? Plus the axe aficionados will pan it for being an all-show no-go shelf princess. OTOH if it did have a hardened poll then the axe gurus would praise it that much more and it would get a reputation of being a solid and desirable piece of kit.

People love to read reviews on the internet before buying anything now. If you're gonna make one, make one that will get good reviews not bad reviews.

Thanks for listening.

Tom

P.S. - if you just want to market a heavier hatchet then make a house axe."

I wrote to them too. I'd spend a little more to buy a better product! What i wrote;
I am looking forward to the release of your new hatchet. However I'd be looking forward to buying one if it had a hardened poll/stiffened eye walls. There is a definite need for this product and i I'm pretty sure guys would cough up some extra dough for the better, more useable product. I for one will! I hope you will consider this? The Made In America faction of purchasers that i know and many over seas tool guys too would respect and buy from a company that listened and delivered! Thanks for your time and attention! Kind Regards

I dont understand the need to use a tiny little axe like that so hard as a hammer that you wreck the eye... It's just a lil guy, why would you use it as a drilling hammer?
Not saying I don't want a hardened poll on it, but if you go tanking up the little axe otherwise, it turns into a big axe on a little stick. Prone to its own set of issues then, even if that's my personal preference.
But along the lines of making it more usable with the hard poll, reducing the taper from the bit to the poll would add meat to the eye area without needing to thicken it too much, perhaps even allowing enough room on the side to hump it up along its whole length a bit without making it look like a rhomboid. That would give that raised centerline that seems to be so hard to find in new designs and add significant reinforcement to the eye vs collapsing from hammering, maybe not with much or any extra weight, depending how they execute it.

Its a nice sized tool, and it reminds me of a baby rafting axe. I'll probably get one just because of that unless they get away from that aesthetic too far.
