Hello, fellow neck knife aficianados! I have completed a review of Running Dog Knife Company's Little Pup neck knife. I know we neck knife fans are always looking for new ones, and we can buy them, usually, considering their low cost! Anyway, the Little Pup is a great knife at an excellent price. Check out my review! http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Lab/1298/littlepuprvw.html
Lemme know what you think!

Interesting knife. I think that the kydex sheath could be a little smaller but otherwise it looks OK.

I understand that the only place to see their knives is the Photopoint page - am I correct?

One more thing: Do you think it would be possible to compare it with for example CS Paraedge??

Dr. Lathe, a lot of the ergonomic problems associated with small knives can be cancelled using thicker handles. For example, my Sean Perkins Seraph (top knife in the pic below) has a 2" handle, but the stock is 1/4" instead of 1/8". The handles of the Little Pup and Serpah are somewhat similar in shape and size, but feel completely different.

David1967, I do not have a CS Paraedge to compare the Little Pup to. I am planning a large comparison/review of a bunch of my small fixed blades, which may show some results that you are looking for. The knives to be tested are my three Sean Perkins models, a Jens Anso Personal Sheepfoot kit knife, Little Pup, REKAT Fang, Emerson LaGriffe, and probably a few others that I am forgetting.

Chiro,

Nice review! I bought one of these little beauties a while back and was pleased as punch! Michael gave me a great deal and great service.

Chiro: thanks for the review and the pics. The Pup seems to be a nice setup. I especially like the blade shape but the sheath comes a bit far down on the handle. If I intended to carry this neck knife for PP (Protective Purposes)then I' d much prefer more handle to grab on to than what is exposed (partially covered). But otherwise a nice setup.

Nakano

PS- 1084 is the way to go.

Chiro 75 I would be interested in your opinion of the Woo and Little Pecker, made by Newt Livesay in comparison to the other neck knives you have used. Thanks

Hey Chiro! Thanks for the review and all the kind words!

As you noted, we have made some changes in the PUP since you received yours, one of the first production run...

We have added a little bit to the handle and it feels a little better IMO...

The sheaths are a little smaller as well and cut up higher onto the handle so that you have a little more to grab on to!

Also I do a little better finish on the edges...They get polished now so they aren't as rough...

The "Black Moly" is KG Products Gun-Kote...it is sprayed on and baked to harden...I have started to be a little more generous with the coating...

I love the feedback! All of our work changes as we go along...We try to improve all aspects of our work as we can...The "PUP" was a design experiment and is used more as a lightweight personal utility knife than as a self defence knife...although having something sharp is better than nothing...

It would be wrong of me not to mention my partner at Running Dog, Del Guthrie...He is doing most of our design work and he's the one grinding the "PUP"s...

Then there's Lucky the Dog...Without thumbs, he's not as much help in the shop as I would have liked, but he's good to have around...

I am working right now on a web based catalog as well as a paper one...I will post prices on the Photopoint website for general information purposes...or e-mail me...

Thanks again!

Guys:
Nakano2- The nice thing about the Little Pup sheath is that the dome-head set screw is the means by which the knife is retained in the sheath. You could literally remove all the material from this point to the handle on the sheath and it would function the same (maybe more side-to-side play, but you see what I am getting at). As a result, you could use your Dremel tool or files to cut away the entire area that blocks where your index finger would land on the draw, and it would be a perfect improvement exactly what you are looking for. It would take three minutes with a Dremel sanding disc. To illlustrate my point, it would look like the top sheath in this pic (hopefully not too dark), which i made for a customer for a Chris Reeve Mountaineer II, I think:

With that knife, the hand falls exactly where it would be placed when using the knife even while the knife is totally sheathed. That results in minimal shifting of the hand after drawing. Removal of a slight amount of Kydex from the Little Pup's sheath would produce the same effect.
Fudo- The only Livesay knife I have is a Titanium Tiger, which is totally non-utilitarian. I am planning a head-to-head test of half-dozen to full dozen of popular custom and production small fixed blades (under 6" OAL) soon, but I don't have these knives from Livesay. If I contaced him, do you think he would send something out?
Mike- I'm glad the review is getting the attention you deserve. I am really liking some of the other designs on the webpage, too. If you want, send me another design that is different from the Little Pup and I will add it to the big review that I am planning (I'll send it back!

Chiro! I have been getting e-mail feedback all day! WHAT A BLAST!

I've had more discussions about that little screw... Hey! If the Stiff Kiss can get away with it, so can I...
smile.gif

I'm going out right now to work on a batch of PUPs and I might try going without...(screwless?)

One thing I like about it, is that it take the wear rather than the blade...And they do stay in the sheath...I'm working on a consistant 2-3 pound pull, more than enought for a two ounce blade...

I have taken the sheath modification suggestions to heart...Originally a cord pull or the pawprint cut-out was enough to unsheath the knife(or so I thought)...I will change the sheath to include a cut-out for the handle...I have been making them from .60 Concealex™ BTW...

Let me know which blade you would like to look at next...the eight or so I have posted are just the first...when I get the web site up we will be showing additional styles as well as our short swords and Bowies and other sharp and pointy tools...

I am psyched! I have two on order from a previous thread when Blues (I think)first mentioned mentioned the pups and Running Dog.

Sing,

Wasn't me. I can't take credit.

I do own a good handful of neck knives though, and enjoy the heck out of them, as you well know.

(Nemo tells me he is hand delivering a new one for me to review when he arrives here on Friday! I'll be sure to write something up shortly.)

Meanwhile, sounds like another nice little knife is being discussed right here.

David1967, in addition to the CRK Mountaineer II pictured, there is a Benchmade Auto-Spike and a Benchmade Nimravus. I showed the sheath with the optional IWB carry, for right side draw from the small of the back. The sheath that came with the original is not a whole lot different from the one I made. My improvements were better carry (high ride vertical, IWB, and horizontal), better retention, and a better shape toward the blade end of the handle, allowing a really good grip right off the draw. The stock sheath held the blade nicely, but if you turn it upside-down, it let go very easily.
