Neck knife for EDC? If so, how?

I would like to know if anyone carries a neck knife... I recently got an Izula and I think it would make the perfect EDC blade. If you do carry a neck knife, what kind of material is used? I read online that paracord is dangerous as you can be pulled and pushed with it. Thanks

I use paracord for my neck knife but I have a break-away barrel. You can also use a piece of tightly fitting tubing. Just put your neck cord into both sides.

I believe that the biggest threat is not going to be choked during a fight but rather just leaning over machinery, a fence, car door, etc. Those are real, everyday choking hazards.

Yup, I melt the ends of my paracord into a glob and flatten them, then slide the ends into heat-shrink tubing and melt. Holds the sheath well enough for me to draw my knife, but will break away before I choke to death.

I carry a CRKT Folts Minimalist and a Becker Necker this way at various times.

Now I can laugh with my MAN PURSE while all of you choke with those cords around your necks...

MUAHAHAHAH

Take the core out of 550 cord. Then slide ball chain into the hollowed out 550 shell. Melt and roll the ends tight to the ends of the ball chain. If you want to get fancy a little shrink tube at the ends keeps things clean. I have been carrying an EKI LaGriffe for many years that way.

I have a couple of neck knives that I have set up the same way, and others that I have on plain paracord. ArchAngel's solution works well and looks nice.

I've read about the possibility of choking, but I think it is blown out of proportion. I've been wearing an i.d. badge around my neck on either chain or paracord for 30 years and I've _never_ had a problem. The only differences between that and a neck knife are what is hanging off of the cord and where it hangs. The badge hangs outside of my shirt, whereas my neckers are dangling inside my shirt and are even less of an issue.

Or, incorporate the neck knife onto your neck chain; for out of site, out of mind:

Here's another option, for those who like to make a statement :D

The Minimalist is my preferred neck knife.
I carry a CRKT Folts Minimalist ...

There are less than 1000 choking deaths per year in the USA. Of those, most are due to food. I believe that the chance of death by choking for the unlucky 100 is diminished with a breakaway device.

There is a reason why three million servicemen wear breakaway devices for their US military identification (dog) tags. And by the way, "ball chain" is a breakaway device.

I carry my izula around my neck with paracord.....It stays underneath my shirt and I haven't had an issue with it, I edc it everyday.....

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I'll stick to my bags and pockets... :D

30 yrs of carrying something around his neck is absence of evidence?

I've spent a good # of yrs wearing a badge on the end of a ball-chain & have carried a neck knife now & then. Choking from either item has not been a problem & I've been in some violent situations while wearing them.

The biggest problem I've found is that the neck knife "could" swing around & possibly end up behind me, not in front where I can get to it. However, connecting the sheath to the chain/cord so that it doesn't freely move on the chain/cord will help.

If legal, a neck knife is a decent method of carrying an extra knife & is definitely a concealable alternative to other methods of carrying. It's also ambidextrous in that it can be accessed with either hand.

As to what to carry, my favorites are the HAK, Emerson La Griffe, or Spyderco Swick/SPOT (If you can find them). The finger hole works great for a neck knife, making it easier to draw & use. Having said that, the Folts Minimalist is a very good low-cost neck knife that doesn't have a finger hole in it.

I think that the Minimalist by Alan Folts is one of the greatest neck knife designs of all time.

I've carried neck knives with and without a breakaway option; no issues either way. I carry my neck knife under my shirt. This keeps the knife from banging into things and eliminates the entanglement issues.

+ 1 on the man purse...

er, I mean, breakaway paracord melt tie thingy. Yeah, that's what I meant.

I EDC my Boker Plus Gnome, but not around my neck. I either:

1. slide my belt through the paracord loops and wear it on my belt.

2. clip the carabiner on my belt loop and let the knife hang upsidedown.

I bet you get asked this alot, "Say, is that your little Gnome dangling there or you just happy to see me?" :D

Can we get a shot of that Boker Plus Gnome

Sure can. You know the saying, "It's bigger than it looks."? Well, the Gnome is actually a pretty small knife. The lanyard gives you that little extra to hold onto in the palm of your hand.

Here's a better pic of just the knife.

Now that I've looked at the pic I posted of the knife with the carabiner, I can actually slide my belt through the carabiner and wear it upsidedown hanging from my belt; instead of from my belt loop on my jeans. Definitely more secure that way.
