neck knife for fishing

This one is directly from Fällkniven, look at the source :)

Absolutely agree - Fallkniven WM-1.
If you want something more rust resistant AND cheaper, maybe the CRKT Ryan's Plan B in AUS6. Very nice little knife.
Greetings,

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm going rainbow fishing tomorrow and then I'm doing my annual dipnet trip for sockeye salmon after that. I'll do my neck knife shopping whn I return.

Ahhh, summer in Alaska. :)

Thanks again,
Akw

The Kantas Hawker neck knife is a fantabulous little neck knife of AUS 6. Holds edge well and sharpens easily. Rust resistance is high and it is very light weight. Your best bet is a blade with a high content of Chromium and Molybdenum like the Tramontina knives of Brazil. This is what is used for SCUBA diving knives generally. Hope this helps

I would recommend the Camillus Mini-Talon or Kti Carsons F4 Neck Knife in BG42 or S30V.

Both will be available for around $150.

I carry both every day and they are both useful and rust resistant.

I have not had any problems sharpening my Mini Talon.

Hey man, how's the fishin' so far this season?

Mine's SUCKED, primarily cuz I'm spendin' all my time working at the airport, or fixin' up the new house. Although I did lend a knife to some people leaving the Airport last night and they returned the favor by giving me some Silver and King...

Anyhoo, I've come to love the neck knives myself when fishing and canoeing here, packing, mountain biking...gee..damn near anything in the outdoors, now that I think of it... and definitely have some prerequisites that basically involve light weight, plain edge, excellent sheath retention, and expendable. Sure you've seen quite a bit of fancy, high dollar equipment go up stream yourself....

Anyhoo, my personal favorites are MOD Scorpion)light, rust resistant coationg, good strong sheat retention, and the hawk bill sharpened part of the blade is nice.

Timberline Mini-pitbull- just a plain whoop a$$ design, and fairly stain restistant AUS 6 steel, decent sheath and retention, an' best of all 1SKS has 'em for $25 bucks a piece. Ray over at Northern Knives has 'em too, but a bit more spendy. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=207474&highlight=mini+pitbull

try not to laugh too hard here.. but a Blackie Collins Buddy System, by far the best retention, and it's pretty expendable also, as well as being nicely sized, and not feeling too heavy on your neck. You can even get 'em in blue or hot pink to compliment your wardrobe...
:D If you like the sheath system of those, AG Russell has a slightly larger one with the same sheath system, barely ways more and has a very thin blade, should be a pretty awesome slicer. Bird and Trout maybe? think someone may have mentioned it already...

The WM-1 honestly looks like the best suggestion thus far, probably better than my MOD Scorpion, at the $60 and up price point, but if'n ya' want expendability, I'd suggest the Mini-Pitbull.

Hope ya' enjoy what's left of Summer!

Oh hey, I forgot that rough, tough Alaska image...uhmmm....

ARRGGHH!! Just hang a BK&T Brute from Yer neck an' be done wid it! it's a lil' small for us Alaska types, but it takes care of the light work....:D

I would recomend the Fallkniven WM1 and Camillus Mini-Talon as well. I've used both pretty extensively and have no complaints. I've been able to put shaving edges on both without much problem.

I'd think something made from 440C would be a good choice. It is supposed to be very rust resistant, as well as having better edge holding than the lower grade steels. Maybe there is a custom make who offers a neck knife in 440C.

Well yesterday I finally stopped in at a knife store that I driven by about 50 times located near downtown Anchorage. I went in to check out many of the suggestions I was given in this thread. I came out with a knife that wasn't mentioned by anyone. Oops! A Benchmade 160. Not too fancy, but I think it will do the trick. It has Gin1 steel which I guess is okay. After sharpening the blade up to my specifications I took it on a rainbow trout fly fishing trip today.

Light weight, accessible, no rust spotting,... overall a real success. I hardly noticed I had it around my neck. Keep in mind though that I was carrying a rain jacket, fishing vest, tippet spools, bug dope, sun screen, rain hat, flies, split shot, camera, gps, water, apple, strike indicators, sun glasses, nippers, hook sharpener, ... I probably wouldn't have noticed a bayonet hanging from my neck. :)

Fishing was good. Approx. 20 rainbows hooked and about a dozen landed. Largest was just a tad over 24 inches in length. 1 grayling. Fun.

My wife told me I don't need anymore knives. Next time I need to remember to pay with cash. :D

sounds like you met Ray over at Northern Knives. Been buying most of my knives there a couple years now. Hell of a nice guy, and he gives some terrific deals for a B&M shop. Good call on the BM tether knife, it does look like it'd do a heckuva decent job. take care, eh?

If you are looking for rust resistance, try S30V. its supposed to be more rust resistant that 440C, and hold a edge longer. If you are interested in a custom knife, please email me. thanks.

Outdoor Edge Wedge or Wedge II, have both delivered to your door for 27 bux. Very cool little knives!
