Neck Knife in the woods?????

To each his own. Maybe you've got a little more swing in your hips than the rest of us. :)

Not to hijack the thread, but that was hilarious. :p

@The Horton - Are you sure that is a BACKUP? A .52 blade as a backup?

heh, maybe so... to each his own. I just find it incredibly annoying and impractical. Been doing alot of baldric carry as of late, though. Around the neck and under the armpit... easy to access, secure, doesn't flop around, clear of the pack. I could see carrying a necker like that...

I carry a necker almost every day urban and wilderness. Here in civilization I use a ball chain because I worry more about a human hand getting tangled in it on purpose. I've been carrying my NRGS in the bush for years and it never gets snagged. I keep it inside my shirt unless I'm using it. I don't worry about quick access, I have my machete for that.

He makes thinner ones too.

I'm a big fan of baldrics too. I also had this rig made for me.

I've got a few neckers, which I sometimes carry around the yard or when camping.
I find the neck knife convenient in a camp site where I may be wandering around in only shorts or sweat pants.
When out hunting or hiking I just can't get use to the neck knife so I don't wear one away from camp

I often hike with only a neck knife but through trial and error I found that for one to be of real value for me it ended up at a size larger than most would wish to carry round their neck.
I found I needed a blade of 3" and most importantly I needed a full size handle 4" long and chunky enough to be comfortable during prolonged use.
I passed my design thoughts on to Matt of ML Knives and he came up with this modified short survivalist model that he now has added to his line:

Knives smaller than this are still valuable as back up knives to use in a pinch should you lose your main blade, but for me this is the minimum size I'm prepared to use as a stand alone blade !

that's slick! a cheaper alternative is the MercHarness by Mercop

Yeah, the MercHarness is my prefered method; a few years jumping out of planes and you get in the habit of not liking anything around your neck.

Every once in a while, I'll throw on a neck knife around the house, but if I'm doing an serious activities, I'll wear my MercHarness with Fallkniven WM-1 or Izula. This is especially if I'm wearing amphi-pants/shorts that don't have a conventional belt.

I really like that set up for a backup fixed blade or if I can't wear a belt for a proper belt knife. If you're in colder climates and layered up, the neck knife makes access to your blade a lot easier as well.

The neck knife is a very viable method of carry; however, it works better for some than others. Although any knife (especially a fixed blade) is better than nothing, I much prefer a bigger blade as my primary.

as no surprise, i love neck knives...:D and use them often while out in the woods or around camp.. they are perfect when paired with a med. sized fixed blade....:)

so... how do you get underneath the kidney pad and cross straps to get to your knife? and it doesn't rub or bounce around and drive you nuts? and for those that use LBV's or utility belts... I just don't see how it's practical. I'd just as soon shove one of those uncomfortable square molded plastic sheaths down the side of my boot... or baldric style, which makes ten times more sense to me.

button up shirt is one way, that's what I wear....

I hate how short the handles are on some knives.
Just because the blade is small, you don't need a small handle as well

I'm all about the single neck knife. Admittedly, it does get a little heavy after a while.

I figure if this guy can do it, however, so can I.

I don't carry a necker, kind of a pocket knife kinda guy. Need to get a mora.
Butif in a place and this is your center, your basic, essentials, in mountain man lingo, your possibles. is it about your knife, because the few feet of cord tying it around your neck could be handy too. and what else do have mounted to this "rig"? Do you have some type of striker taped on with a few feet of tape? so in a small space you got some stuff, it won't fall out of a hole in your pocket.

Anyhow, I don't wear a knife knife yet. But day to day stuff it you be enough, because I get buy most of the time with a SAK or medium lock blade in my pocket.

have a good day Dr Bill,

Pat

Hi Pat,
I post questions like this to get people to think about why they carry what they carry(or do not choose to carry)----

and to learn from the wisdom of those on the forums more experienced that they are.

Thanks for posting

Dr.Bill

First point, Yes
Second three Yes,Yes,and I don't worry about everyone, everyone with half a brain and some foresight (readers of W&SSe.g.) will probably carry just in case.
Third why? shortish answer. because you might need to cut something. Longish answer. From reading things like W&SS, I have learned about belt order kits, etc. If from some reason I am not wearing a belt(summer shorts, beach etc.)I will still have my Fallkniven WM1 around my neck. now some of the other tings that got brought up. Access. I wear two kinds of shirts as a rule. Three button golf shirts and/or tank tops. I can reach down from the neck, not up and under and have my knife out in a jiffy and until I reach for it,nobody notices it. access under pack straps,I find it easier to get my necker out than the one that's on my belt tucked under the pack hip strap. I keep it under shirt because that keeps it from swaying around and getting snagged. Security from choking. I just use paracord, but if I had to,I could hollow out a paracord sheath to go over a breakaway ball chain. Hygiene.Paracord gets stinky after a while so I wear my knife in the shower with me or throw the sheath in the washing machine. As an aside, I drool when I see Pict's setup. I usually carry as said,a WM1 as a neck knife, but when I feel the need for something lighter I go with an A.G. Russell Hunter's scalpel. It is not DEET proof though,so just around the city.
