heh, maybe so... to each his own. I just find it incredibly annoying and impractical. Been doing alot of baldric carry as of late, though. Around the neck and under the armpit... easy to access, secure, doesn't flop around, clear of the pack. I could see carrying a necker like that...
Heres one of mine I used in a coarse in Alaska. Only knife I had.
I'm a big fan of baldrics too. I also had this rig made for me.
Busse Game Warden, Black Oxide Leatherman Wave, and a Surefire G3 LED with a few spare batteries.

that's slick! a cheaper alternative is the MercHarness by Mercop
I often hike with only a neck knife but through trial and error I found that for one to be of real value for me it ended up at a size larger than most would wish to carry round their neck.
I found I needed a blade of 3" and most importantly I needed a full size handle 4" long and chunky enough to be comfortable during prolonged use.
I passed my design thoughts on to Matt of ML Knives and he came up with this modified short survivalist model that he now has added to his line:

Knives smaller than this are still valuable as back up knives to use in a pinch should you lose your main blade, but for me this is the minimum size I'm prepared to use as a stand alone blade !
so... how do you get underneath the kidney pad and cross straps to get to your knife? and it doesn't rub or bounce around and drive you nuts? and for those that use LBV's or utility belts... I just don't see how it's practical. I'd just as soon shove one of those uncomfortable square molded plastic sheaths down the side of my boot... or baldric style, which makes ten times more sense to me.
I hate how short the handles are on some knives.I often hike with only a neck knife but through trial and error I found that for one to be of real value for me it ended up at a size larger than most would wish to carry round their neck.

I don't carry a necker, kind of a pocket knife kinda guy. Need to get a mora.
Butif in a place and this is your center, your basic, essentials, in mountain man lingo, your possibles. is it about your knife, because the few feet of cord tying it around your neck could be handy too. and what else do have mounted to this "rig"? Do you have some type of striker taped on with a few feet of tape? so in a small space you got some stuff, it won't fall out of a hole in your pocket.
Anyhow, I don't wear a knife knife yet. But day to day stuff it you be enough, because I get buy most of the time with a SAK or medium lock blade in my pocket.
have a good day Dr Bill,
Pat
