For the past year or so I've been busy grinding straight razors and the rare kitchen knife when time has allowed; to break the monotony I'm wanting to grind a couple of neck knives to give out as Christmas gifts to a few friends and family members. With that said, what are your thoughts on what makes a great neck-knife? What are your preferences for steel, shape and sheath? Thank you guys in advance for entertaining my query.

Regards,
Mike

Thank you for your responce I appreciate you taking the time. I made that knife a while ago but it never felt right. :-)

How about a neck Kamisori? You can grind it a little thicker behind the edge and give it a tiny bit of belly so it can handle everyday slicing duties.

I like the dimensions of cold steel's spike series of neck knives. And kydex sheaths are necessary for neck knives in my opinion.

I have a couple of neck knives, but my favourite is the CRKT fixed Falcon. It just fits into my hand beautifully, and the blade is a great size and shape for my needs. I don't mind them cord wrapped, but a simple handle feels better to me.

Yes, me too, with jump wing etching on the blade :)

hahaha, I take it you liked the straight razor that I did for a kid in the military a few months back. :D

I'd love to do a neck razor/kamisori but honestly, I'm quite burned out on razors at this point.

Thank you Gregorio. Do you not find the feel of kydex cheap? I've done a few kydex sheaths and they always felt odd; I was thinking of trying a stabilized 5oz leather sheath as it is stiff but still keeps some warmth.

Numbersman, thanks for your input, I too prefer a very simple handle. Truth be told I was thinking of a skeletonized-barebones handle to lessen weight as a heavy item around my neck never seemed appealing.

I know they are supposed to be kinda small. But I like the necker to still be a good worker. So: small blade, yes. But I need a good sized handle (small fixed blades w full handles are some of my favorites).

Also- mind the cord used to tie it around the neck. A neck knife, whether we like it or not, is really very close to being a medal. Don't just use parachute cord or ball-chain. Make it a lil nice!

10 Karat Gold chains? :D

What do y'all think of something like this?

If you take that neck k ice and insert thin scales like a CRK Inyoni than you got something there.

Same here... like. Neck knife for my purposes would be for SD. I'll carry something else for "working" :D
