Neck knife questions...

I was wondering if anyone could give me a little information on neck knives. Were they originally intended to be worn upside down in the sheath around the neck? If so, why? Also, what would be considered a good average functional size? What blade and handle length? I am planning on making a few, but I would like them to be as "traditional" as possible. Thanks.

My intention is to come up with some smaller knives that I can produce at a more affordable rate for my customers. I figured making some nice small neck knives would give my customers some options. Not everyone wants a big knife.

Any help would be appreciated.

They are point-up so you can pull them out one-handed, as the lanyard hold the sheath.
If they were the other way, you'd have to hold the sheath to get them out.
Most of the ones I have are 1.5-2.5" blades with a two or three finger handle.
My latest one is a tad over 3", but still a pretty small knife.

Make the sheath nice and tight with eyelets top and bottom, that way they can choose how they want to carry it.

"Originally" these were pouch knives.... frontier people carried them point down in pouches worn around their neck. My in-laws do the mountain man and 1812 war reenactments and I sell some of my neckers/EDC to people in point down sheaths.

Are you serious! I thought everyone carried a bowie in their waistband. :)

I like the size of neck knives, but don't like reaching up inside my shirt to remove it. I personally prefer small 'neck' sized knives, but with small belt carry set ups. Or, sometimes even pocket sheaths without a belt loop.
